From March 11 through 15, genConnect.com is on-site in downtown Austin, Texas conducting personal interviews with speakers slated to appear at the innovative South by Southwest (SXSW) Interactive Conference in Austin’s Convention Center.

We are at the event as credentialed press, hosting “2.5 Minutes With genConnect” in the Chevy Volt ReCharge Lounge during the conference.

Monday afternoon we sat down with Twanna Hines, a Manhattan-based sex and relationship writer and creator of FunkyBrownChick.com. This was Twanna’s fifth or sixth time coming to SXSW and this year she hosted a panel about people power, addressing how personal stories influence brands. See our interview with Twanna below:

TWANNA HINES: I’m having an excellent time. It’s a great conference. KELLY HAYES: Have you been before? TWANNA HINES: I’ve been here four or five times now. Repeat visitor, speaker. Things like that. KELLY HAYES: So this afternoon you hosted a panel. TWANNA HINES: Exactly. KELLY HAYES: And what was the panel about? TWANNA HINES: It was called power people, and it how we use our personal story to leverage our brand. So how does your story influence you audience, grow audience, and bring people together. KELLY HAYES: Give me an example who might use a personal story to influence their brand? TWANNA HINES: So many people. And this was one of the things we talked about at the panel. Whether you’re a small entrepreneur or a large company, the Twitter feed, your Facebook. You’re telling your personal story every day. Interacting with your customers is your customer service, or your story with your customers. And so we were telling people how to kind of manage that relationship. KELLY HAYES: So does this apply just to businesses, or does this apply to individuals as well? TWANNA HINES: This applies to individuals as well. Because one of the most important keys when we think about telling your story is authenticity. It’s your story. And so that matters in brands. It matters in relationships. But if someone does something to hurt you, as all relationships do because we’re human and we make mistakes. When you tell your story to your partner, and say look, when you did that that really hurt me. It may not have hurt someone else. Someone else could have interpreted it differenly. So everyone’s got their story, and the way that they deal with things. KELLY HAYES: So the FUNKY BROWN CHICK is basically talking about people being honest and maintaining authenticity? TWANNA HINES: Absolutely. KELLY HAYES: It’s important to people to really put themselves out there, is that right? TWANNA HINES: Indeed. Because at the end of the day, you can’t get what you need and you want if you’re not putting your needs and you wants out there. So it’s a way of living your life most openly and honestly as possible. KELLY HAYES: What is Twanna Hines’ story in New York? What do you do there? TWANNA HINES: I am a sex writer in New York. So that means I’m simply a writer, and I write about sex and relationships. So that’s everything from how technology influences our lives in relationships, to what are some tips that you can do to improve your relationships. These types of things.
