Tim O’ Reilly: Use Values to Build Your Business (VIDEO)
Founder and CEO of O’Reilly Media, Inc., Tim O’Reilly, had valuable information to share in this short amount of time. He spoke of the importance of values in business, something that he says resonates in all generations in just “2.5 minutes with genConnect” below:
TIM O’REILLY: Thanks.
KELLY HAYES: So you’ve come before to South by Southwest?
TIM O’REILLY: No.
KELLY HAYES: This is your first time. What are your impressions thus far?
TIM O’REILLY: Obviously fantastic networking opportunity, great crowd, looks like good content, though I haven’t had much chance to sample it.
KELLY HAYES: Your speech today is–?
TIM O’REILLY: I didn’t have a speech, I was being interviewed, so it was just really a sense of what I’ve done in my career. Jason Calacanis said, you interview people at your conferences, I’d like to interview you. I said OK. A lot of what I talked about was how values in business drive brand, how they drive success, and how we need more people to focus on making a difference rather than just making money.
KELLY HAYES: There’s a wide range of generations here at South by Southwest. Does that message resonate with younger people who are coming up, who are digitally adept, but maybe just learning a little bit about business?
TIM O’REILLY: I guess my sense is that values always resonate with people. I think that people don’t get talked to enough about the idea that they should work on things that matter, and they should be thinking about what matters to them, what matters to society. And it’s really great to be reminded that great companies do care about those things, do think about those things, and that they should too.
KELLY HAYES: Over the course of your career, have you found these companies are becoming much more aware of their responsibilities, of the things they need to do to relate to the values of their customers?
TIM O’REILLY: No, I would say in general, a lot of companies have become less attuned way. There’s an awful lot of companies, particularly we saw this in the financial sector, of companies who were just concerned with what they could take out of the ecosystem, and didn’t really give a damn about anybody else. I think we see that with an awful lot of companies. But I said great companies do care about that, and that’s why we need to celebrate the ones that do act that way. I was pleased that I think that my company has been in that category, where we have made a lot of difference in the world for a lot of entrepreneurs over the years. And we’ve put more into the ecosystem than we’ve taken out of it, and that’s something that everybody should aspire to.
