Melo Down: 6 Things You May Not Know About Knicks Golden Ticket Carmelo Anthony

Justin Bieber move over … Everyone seems to have Carmelo “Melo” Anthony fever these days.

The NBA star has left the Denver Nuggets for the New York Knicks and it’s the most popular topic at water coolers, dinner parties and news rooms. Even New York Yankees star Derek Jeter weighed in, saying, ”the Knicks made a good trade … Carmelo is going to help them out. Everyone in New York is excited about it.”

The 26-year-old Brooklyn-born star – who played in both the 2004 and 2008 Olympics with the USA Basketball Team – w ill make his debut with the Knicks tonight when the team plays Milwaukee Bucks at New York City’s Madison Square Garden.

Besides being a basketball phenom, here are tidbits you may not know about Melo so you can contribute to all the talks …

1. He has a nonprofit called The Carmelo Anthony Foundation, which invests in programs, leaders and community organizations that empower and provide opportunities for under-served children and families in Carmelo’s home communities such as Denver and Baltimore.

2. He is text buddies with Michael Jordan. “I have a lot of interaction with him,” Anthony has said. “We talk over text a lot. Whenever I see him, we sit down and talk. Sometimes we talk about business, sometimes we talk about sports, other times we talk about whatever’s going on in the world at the moment.”

3. He likes to cook just about anything, but he doesn’t eat red meat or pork; he loves seafood and chicken. Here’s a recommended diet by health coach Judy Weitzman.

4. He prefers red wine (Pinot Noir in particular) – something our genConnect wine expert Jessyca Frederick can relate to! Read her tips on the best gift to get the wine drinkers in your life.

5. He has his own sandwich at New York’s famous Carnegie Deli. Yes, folks, the “Melo Sandwich” includes pastrami, corned beef, salami, bacon, lettuce, tomato and Russian dressing on rye bread. Our question is, would meat-conscious Melo actually eat that?!

6. He is married with a son, Kiyan, turning 4 years old in March. His sister Carmelo died last year of a “pre-existing medical condition.”
