Gay Couples Push for Right to Marry This Valentine’s Day

Millions of couples around the world will celebrate Valentine’s Day today – whether it be by giving flowers, chocolates, cards, or going out to a nice dinner by candlelight. All in the name of love.

But for gay couples who cannot marry in most states, they will use this special day of Freedom to Marry Month to push for equality in marriage. Same-sex couples across the country will seek marriage licenses today in their respective states as a way to make a statement that they believe they deserve to be married just as heterosexual couples do. Couples will participate in gay wedding celebrations, protests, and other events.

“We engage in this annual event to put a local face on marriage discrimination around the country and render visible the discrimination currently enforced at government marriage counters in most states in America,” said Marriage Equality USA Media Director Molly McKay. “As we move forward in the courts and with our elected representatives, we also need to build support within the court of public opinion and you can help us by organizing or participating in a local marriage counter action in your area.”

We wish a Happy Valentine’s Day to everyone! Give a hug or a kiss – or an e-card or yummy Edible Arrangement – to someone you love!
