Chelsea Clinton Makes Debut as TV Reporter; How Did She Do?
Chelsea Clinton says her late grandmother inspired her to do more with her celebrity status; she’s using that to highlight people making a difference for NBC’s “Rock Center With Brian Williams,” and receiving great reviews on Facebook
Chelsea Clinton says she wanted to become a journalist to lead a “purposefully public life,” and she is focusing on people and organizations making a difference in her new profession.
The former First Daughter made her broadcast journalism debut this week on NBC’s “Rock Center With Brian Williams,” joining the ranks of other former White House children like Jenna Bush Hager and Meghan McCain who have taken to TV in their post-White House endeavors. So why did this young woman, who shunned the press in her previous life, want to suddenly embrace the press?
“For most of my life I did deliberately lead a private life and inadvertently led a public life,” Chelsea told Williams in an interview this week, adding that her recently deceased grandmother inspired her to do more with her celebrity. “She had been cajoling me and challenging me…to lead more of a purposefully public life – that being Chelsea Clinton had happened to me, and that I had a responsibility to do something with that asset and opportunity,” she added.
Although Chelsea received mixed reviews on her debut, she is receiving great support on Facebook, with comments such as:
- “Chelsea, Congratulations on Your Network Premiere, ‘Rock Center With Brian Williams,’ Keep Up The Excellent Work, & we can each ‘Make A Difference’ The World is a Better Place b/c of the Clinton Family, God Bless & Happy Holidays!!”
- “Well done Chelsea. Congratulations!”
- “I think your first report was great Chelsea and I hope you ignore all critical reviews. You have all the charisma you will ever need!”
- “[You were] perfect, felt you demonstrated such professionalism, and complete overall coverage of the content through interview. I am so proud of you, as a former State Employee with the Arkansas Department of Correction, now retired, it gives me pleasure to have watched you grow into the very beautiful and special young lady that you have, and I commend you on your perfection and winning personality and smile, which is a plus for the young lady you’ve become. I am so looking forward to watching you on other assignments in your Journalist career! Thanks and God bless you and Yours!”
Chelsea is trying to bring more attention to people and organizations doing good for their community – and that’s worth more than just a mention. This week’s episode, for example, focused on the Arkansas non-profit, Targeting Our People’s Priorities With Service (TOPPS), and its founder Miss Annette Dove.
Tell us: What do you think of Chelsea Clinton’s broadcast journalism debut?
“TOPPS meets every need of her kids all under one roof. The program provides them with a safe place to do their homework and socialize after school; tutoring help; mentoring programs; the opportunity to visit colleges and the world beyond Pine Bluff; and healthy meals and snacks,” Chelsea writes about the non-profit. ”Miss Dove also helps teach kids how to cook and make nutritious meals out of what their families receive from the food bank or the Salvation Army.” TOPPS reportedly has received amazing support and response since Chelsea’s piece aired Monday.
Chelsea is chronicling her journalism experiences on Facebook, and thanked everyone for their support as she launched her new endeavor. She wrote this late Monday night after her first piece aired:
“Thank you all so much for your words of support! It was an honor to highlight the remarkable work that Miss Dove does everyday in Pine Bluff and a privilege to get to know her, her family and some of the TOPPS kids through Rock Center. I would love to learn more about the inspiring people and organizations in your communities, here in the United States and around the world. Please write to me on my wall if you have ideas for my next segment! Together, we will “Make a Difference!”
We wish Chelsea Clinton the best of luck with her journalism experiences, and hope she continues to shine a light on worthy causes and people making a difference!
