Sen. George Mitchell: ‘A New Order’ Is Needed in the Middle East

[ 0 ] July 25, 2014 |

Sen. George Mitchell served as the U.S. Special Envoy for Middle East Peace from January 2009 to May 2011, as well as Senate Majority Leader from 1995 to 1989, and has been named by TIME magazine as one of the 100 most influential people in the world.

So when it comes to what’s happening in the Middle East and the violence wracking the region, Mitchell has a unique perspective on what needs to happen to bring stability to the people living in the area.

WATCH as Sen. George Mitchell, now partner and Chairman Emeritus at DLA Piper global law firm, talk to genConnect about the future of the Middle East, the threat of militants bringing terror to the region, and what the U.S. can do:

“There will be continued turbulence. The political order of the Middle East … is collapsing and we don’t know for sure what is going to replace it,” Mitchell said.

As the population increases dramatically the region, and with a general history of “ineffective governance” that can’t provide that population with a growing economy with jobs, healthcare, good education, housing – basic needs of people, Mitchell says – the region will continue to struggle “until it gets sorted out and a new order is established.”isis2

When it comes to the threat posed by ISIS, the militant group that is creating terror throughout Iraq and Syria, Mitchell says the threat of the group by the world was orginally underestimated but now the danger is that they are being overestimated.

“I don’t think they have the capacity to establish or organize a state and I think in fairly short order, that will become clear,” Mitchell said. “But that doesn’t mean the threat doesn’t exist because it will exist in other areas and other circumstances.”

The conflict between Sunni and Shiite Muslims began 1,400 years ago, Mitchell reminds us – so it’s not going to be revolved in short order. And the U.S. shouldn’t think it can control every event throughout the world, he added.
