What Is Mindful Marriage?

For me, Mindful Marriage practice is more an answer to a spiritual call than a business. My mission is “Helping People Wake Up Together”.  I strive to do this through relationship coaching that teaches time-honored mindfulness practices that are common to all the world’s great wisdom traditions.

“Waking Up” means seeing the richness and beauty of each other, in each moment, with nothing added and nothing taken away.  It means loving others the way they need to be loved – not necessarily the way that you think they “should” be loved.

Siddhartha Guatama, the historical Buddha, was a person who “woke up” or saw the nature of Reality  clearly.   After his awakening, he taught that “True love is borne from understanding”.

Being in a Mindful Marriage means taking time to  understand yourself and your beloved in an intimate and honest way — free from excessive idealism or romanticism or unrealistic fantasies.

Those in a Mindful Marriage take an unblinking look at themselves and their partner and decide what can be changed and what cannot.   They have the courage to make positive changes when possible, the wisdom to know what must be accepted “as is”, and the strength to accept unchangeable things as they are, rather than one might wish they were.

Mindful Marriage partners choose to love each other because of, and despite, the ever-changing joys and trials of their life together.  They know that in order to increase their understanding and realize true love, they may need to go through some challenging “growth opportunities” – sometimes known as “trials” or “learning experiences.”

These couples are committed to each other, to their relationship, and to working their issues through in a mindful, loving and compassionate way.

Couples who regularly engage in Mindful Marriage practices and “stay the course” learn how to relate to each other in healthy, intentional, “adult” ways rather than falling into unhealthy, less mature, unconscious habits of the past.

A Mindful Marriage may not be for everyone.  If this approach is right for you, you will come to learn that you really can love each other for better or worse, for richer or poorer, in sickness and in health, until death do you part.
