Peyton Manning will become the next quarterback of the Denver Broncos; Tim Tebow to play with the New York Jets

In the entire galaxy, there was just one man who could have upset Tim Tebow’s apple cart.

After a second NFL season that saw Tebow transcend the game to become more than a star, more than a superstar but a genuine flesh and blood folk hero, the bubble burst today as it was announced that Peyton Manning signed a $96 million, five year contract to play for the Denver Broncos. The decision by the man who is arguably the most accomplished quarterback ever to play in the NFL means that Tebow, a former number draft choice of the Broncos, becomes, well, expendable.

Tebow has been replaced, but he is not down for the count. He has found another place to take his talents: New York. He was traded to the New York Jets who had to give up a 4th round draft pick and a 6th-round pick in exchange for the former Heisman Trophy winner. The Jets already have a starting quarterback Mark Sanchez but his poor performance last season has Jets fans wondering if Tebow will take over the #1 spot.

The elements of this story are so compelling on so many levels that it is difficult to find a beginning, much less an ending. In today’s world the blockbuster sports stories generally begin with questions of character. Tiger Wood’s divorce, Brett Favre’s tweets, steroids, gun possessions, etc. But this story involves to players, two men who have unquestioned character. They are pillars of their sport and both, without question would wish nothing but the best for the other.

Manning meanwhile is now in a position where he must prove that he can comeback from a yearlong layoff due to a neck injury. He was introduced today to the news media in Denver and posed for pictures with an orange #18 jersey, the number that was originally worn by the Bronco’s Frank Tripucka, the first quarterback in the franchise’s history, in 1960.

No doubt Bronco fans are hoping that Manning can lead this team to the Super Bowl.
