Obama Sets Progressive Agenda at Second Inauguration (VIDEO)

President Barack Obama referenced progressive policies for the next four years in his inauguration ceremony speech in Washington on Monday, Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. “A decade of war has now ended, an economic recovery has begun,” he said. “America’s possibilities are limitless.”

The president touched on a number of priorities for his second term: entitlement programs like Medicare and Medicaid for future generations, addressing climate change, gay rights, women’s rights and equal pay, immigration reform and gun control.

“Prosperity rests on the broad shoulders of a growing middle class,” Obama said.

Those progressive policies are what drove first-time voters to the polls in November, according to media ecologist Jack Myers, author of Hooked Up: A New Generation’s Surprising Take on Sex, Politics and Saving the World.Myers predicted that Internet natives would come out to vote in big numbers and vote overwhelmingly for Democratic, progressive candidates. Did he get it right?

The theme of this year’s inaugural celebration was “faith in America’s future,” announced Sen. Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.), who served as master of ceremonies.

Musician/singer James Taylor played a folksy “America the Beautiful” and singers Kelly Clarkson (“My Country Tis of Thee”) and Beyonce (“National Anthem”) belted out the patriotic songs. Myrlie Evers-Williams delivered an inclusive convocation and Richard Blanco recited a moving poem that highlighted the American spirit.

The Rev. Dr. Luis Leon provided the benediction: “With your blessing we know that we can break down the walls that separate us.”
