The Miss Universe 2011 contestants vying for the crown last night during the pageant in São Paulo saw Miss Angola Leila Lopes win; Alyssa Campanella, Miss USA, didn’t make the top 10.

Miss Angola, Leila Lopes, won the title of Miss Universe 2011 last night during the pageant in São Paulo, Brazil. Miss USA Alyssa Campanella, a 21-year-old with red hair from California who is a former model in Las Vegas, was widely expected to be among the top handful of finalists and had a large fan base. But it was not to be.

Leila Lopes, a business student, made history winning the first-ever “Miss Universe” title for her country, and she displayed not only great beauty, but great confidence as well.

“Thank God I’m very satisfied with the way God created me and I wouldn’t change a thing,” the 25-year-old said during one of the questions posed to her during the competition, which asked what she would change about her looks. “I consider myself a woman endowed with inner beauty. I have acquired many wonderful principles from my family and I intend to follow these for the rest of my life.”

Lopes hopes to help her country’s impoverishment and will focus her efforts on combatting HIV.

“I’ve worked with various social causes. I work with poor kids, I work in the fight against HIV. I work to protect the elderly and I have to do everything that my country needs,” she said Tuesday. “I think now as Miss Universe I will be able to do much more.”

Lopes’ three beauty tips? Get a lot of sleep, use sun block even when it’s cloudy, and drink lots of water.

Of the other Miss Universe 2011 contestants, the 23-year-old Miss Ukraine Olesia Stefanko was the first runner-up. Before the crown was passed down, the 16 finalists included contestants from France, Kosovo, Colombia, China, Angola, Australia, Puerto Rico, Brazil, Netherlands, USA, Ukraine, Panama, Costa Rica, Portugal, Philippines, and Venezuela.
