Michel Nischan: ‘Local Agriculture Creates a Dialogue’ (VIDEO)

Michel Nischan is a James Beard Award-winning chef, author, and leading figure in the culinary movement, yet he still makes time to help those less fortunate, advocating for regional agriculture and sustainable food sources. Watch Nischan talk with genConnect about the importance of buying local and why he founded the nonprofit, Wholesome Wave:

“I think emphasizing local agriculture creates a dialogue between the eater and the people growing the food,” Nischan says.

His effort, Wholesome Wave, hopes to do just that by improving access to and affordability of fresh, healthy, locally-grown produce to historically underserved communities, in order to create economic viability through local food commerce that can rebuild our nation’s food system.

“If we have the opportunity to create a space where these consumers can actually choose locally grown fruits and vegetables,” Nischan says, “they can become the heroes of a changed food system because they hold on to a lot of purchasing power.”
