Former eBay CEO Meg Whitman has big job ahead of her as chief of Hewlett-Packard
Meg Whitman is the new CEO of Hewlett-Packard.
“I am honored and excited to lead HP. I believe HP matters – it matters to Silicon Valley, California, the country and the world,” Whitman said.
The former CEO of eBay and former California gubernatorial candidate is now head of a computer company that is thinking about spinning off or selling its personal-computer division, and is forging ahead with plans to acquire British software maker Autonomy Corp. for $10.3 billion. Whitman has a large task ahead of her in boosting confidence of investors who were made uneasy by some of the business decisions made by her predecessor, ex-CEO Leo Apotheker, causing the company’s stock to plummet.
The flailing economy is just another challenge for Whitman to navigate her new company through, and HP needs to stay competitive with its rivals, particularly in the tablet market.
“The pace of change has accelerated” around HP, Whitman said, adding that HP needs to anticipate trends like the shift from PCs to tablets like the popular Apple iPad and the rise of low-cost corporate computing through Internet-based rentals of computing power like Amazon Web services.
Although some say Whitman’s experience at consumer-oriented companies such as EBay, Proctor & Gamble, and Hasbro doesn’t exactly translate to the experience needed to run HP, HP seems confident in their pick.
“We are fortunate to have someone of Meg Whitman’s caliber and experience step up to lead HP,” said Board Chairman Ray Lane. “We are at a critical moment and we need renewed leadership to successfully implement our strategy and take advantage of the market opportunities ahead. Meg is a technology visionary with a proven track record of execution. She is a strong communicator who is customer focused with deep leadership capabilities. Furthermore, as a member of HP’s board of directors for the past eight months, Meg has a solid understanding of our products and markets.”
Congratulations to Meg Whitman on her ascension to CEO of HP; we wish her the best of luck in her latest professional endeavor!
