We’ve all heard that eating more fish, nuts and whole grains is not only good for our waistline, but for our heart, as well. Well now a new study shows that following the Mediterranean diet also reduces the risk of metabolic syndrome, a cluster of risk factors that boost the risk of heart disease, stroke and diabetes.
HealthDay News reports that researchers from Greece and Italy reviewed the results of 50 published studies on the Mediterranean diet and found that it is associated with a lower risk of hikes in blood pressure, blood sugar and triglycerides, as well as a reduced risk of a drop in good cholesterol — all of which are risk factors in this type of syndrome. The study is published in the March 15 issue of the Journal of the American College of Cardiology.
“These results are of considerable public health importance,because this dietary pattern can be easily adopted by all population,” the study concludes.
Metabolic syndrome is the name for a group of risk factors linked to obesity that increase your chance of having heart disease, diabetes, stroke, and other diseases. Other risk factors include: a large waistline, higher than normal triglyceride level, a lower than normal HDL cholesterol level, higher than normal blood pressure and higher than normal fasting blood sugar.
- high consumption of fruits, vegetables, bread and other cereals, potatoes, beans, nuts and seeds
- olive oil is an important monounsaturated fat source
- dairy products, fish and poultry are consumed in low to moderate amounts, and little red meat is eaten
- eggs are consumed zero to four times a week
- wine is consumed in low to moderate amounts
So load up your plate with some fruits, veggies and fish and do your heart and waistline good!
