Maria Bartiromo: Is a College Education Worth It?

[ 0 ] January 9, 2014 |

There are so many young people graduating from prestigious colleges, armed with top degrees, who just can’t find jobs in this economy. And with the cost of college being so high and so many students in debt, is a college education really worth it?

CNBC anchor Maria Bartiromo thinks so.

Watch Maria Bartiromo, author and departing anchor of CNBC’s “Closing Bell” and “On the Money With Maria Bartiromo,” give her advice for recent college graduates as they search for jobs, why she thinks the idea that one goes to school to get a job on Wall Street is “so yesterday,” her “3-bucket strategy” for saving and investing, and how young people can be successful:

“This has become the new debate of the day – is the college education and the price of it worth it? Because we all know, it’s expensive,” Bartiromo told genConnect at the Aspen Ideas Festival. “I personally think it is worth it … and education will enable you to tackle a whole host of things.”

Recent college grads need to look at the global economy and determine how their education and moneytalents can fit into expanding industries, even if that means learning on the job, Bartiromo says.

Aside from getting a job after earning your degree, investing one’s money is also an important endeavor to get a jumpstart on. Bartimoro says. “You have to start early. You have to make sure to save money as soon as you’re able to.” Save a little bit each week – even if it’s only $25 a week. Utilize her “3-bucket strategy” for saving and investing early on in your paycheck-earning years – and you won’t have to live paycheck to paycheck.
