The “Mis-Adventures of Awkward Black Girl” is Rae’s comedic web series. The show premiered on YouTube in early 2011 and gained immediate popularity.

“I was inspired to create ‘Mis-Adventures of Awkward Black Girl’ just because I love watching shows like ‘Curb Your Enthusiasm,’ ‘Seinfeld,’ ‘Arrested Development’ — they all have this distinct type of humor that I felt wasn’t really represented in a lot of the shows of color that I watch on television,” Rae told genConnect. “I wanted to create a character that I can relate to, that I understand, that ‘gets’ me.”

The second season of “Awkward Black Girl” kicked off in June 2012 after being picked up by Pharrell Williams’ iamOTHER YouTube Channel. Click here to watch Issa Rae’s web series.
