The Kennedys have been the talk of Sundance. Ethel Kennedy, Bobby Kennedy Jr. and other relatives touched down in Park City, Utah over the weekend for the screening of daughter Rory Kennedy’s film. Unlike any other work she has done, filmmaker Rory turns the camera on her own history and offers an an insightful look into the most iconic family in American history.
“Largely I’ve done documentaries about social issues, things that are happening in the outside world. So this is the first time, and probably the last, that I’ve done one that is about my own family. But the time seemed right and hopefully the film ‘Ethel’ will get out in the world and offer something new and original to the discussion and to the history that my family lived through.”
Different than most of the tragic stories told in the past, Rory thinks her film offers a more uplifting view of her family.
“I think it’s an upbeat film. My mother is so upbeat in the way that she goes through the world despite everything that she’s lived through and all of the tragedies. She has a sense of endurance and purpose and moving forward through the world with such dignity, grace and humor. And I wanted to capture her and that aspect of her. And hopefully the film does that.”
With Ethel Kennedy standing as the strong, beautiful and kind-hearted focus of the film, we asked Rory if she say any similarities between herself and her mother. She wasn’t sure there were many but hopes one day there will be.
“I love my mother and I think she has such a great sense of humor and sense of purpose in life. There are so many aspects of her that I admire and try to live up to.”
