Ford Exec at TED2011: When Cars & the Environment Live in Harmony

Some of the leading figures in business, entertainment and design are gathering in Long Beach, CA, this week for the annual TED Conference to harness the power of ideas to change attitudes, lives and yes – the world.

genConnect’s own CEO Nancy Spears is onsite at the ideas-fest and has offered up to you a play-by-play of Ford Motor Co. Executive Chair Bill Ford‘s speech, and others, on Twitter (@genConnected). Ford chatted about green cars and how before the age of the Ford Model T, most people never traveled more than 25 miles in their entire lifetime. Now, many of us travel more than that just going to work each day – one way!

He also envisions a day in his lifetime when his two passions, the environment and cars, can exist in harmony. Ford stressed that we must solve the problem of global gridlock, since even with the proliferation of more environmentally-friendly cars, “a green traffic jam is still a traffic jam.” His vision of how to achieve that is one of no emissions and freedom of mobility. And cars of course will only get smarter from now on.

“Very soon cars will be talking to each other,” Ford said. “We will build smart cars but we also need time systems that maximize sustainability and mobility.”

Other speakers that joined Ford for the “World Imagined” session and talked about their ideas for a better global community included: Julie Taymor, director & designer; Morgan Spurlock, filmmaker; Terrence McArdle and Ben Newhouse, inventors; and Indra Nooyi, chair and CEO, PepsiCo.

Let’s hope some of their great, imaginative ideas can one day come to fruition!
