Inventor and entrepreneur Dean Kamen has a message for kids: science and technology can be as cool as basketball. “Science and technology is really cool, it’s really fun and if they master it the same way they go after mastering basketball, they’ll have careers that will change their lives and change the future of this country,” Kamen said.
Kamen, a consummate entrepreneur who holds more than 440 patents and invented the Segway, is also founder of For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology (FIRST), an organization that strives to show kids that science and technology are fields that need young talent, and that entertainment and sports shouldn’t be the end-all, be-all for today’s youth.

“FIRST does what the NBA and NFL do for sports,” Kamen told genConnect in the Samsung Blogger Lounge. “We show kids that there are role models and super heroes out there they should be using as their role models who don’t bounce a ball. They think. They solve problems. They create solutions to some of the most complex issues of our time.”
