8 Timeless Fashion Pieces Worth the Splurge (SLIDESHOW)

[ 0 ] July 8, 2011 |

Fashion trends come and go. Your best bet is  investing in the classics that can carry over into all seasons and decades. Fashion Expert Constance Golder explains the 8 timeless pieces to buy and wear now—and for life …

Hot Pants

1. Hot Pants

Colored jeans are surprisingly slimming- These are flying off of store racks everywhere and are super trendy for the Fall.  Check out Current-Elliot's cayenne and cobalt colors.

The Wedge

2. The Wedge Sandal

Leather and suede wedge sandals are great for "pounding the pavement".  These soft fabrics will mold to your feet and keep your toes happy all day.  Invest in a pair now and wear them all through the Fall months.  You might even find a great pair on sale!  Check out Rick Owens and Prada.  Ankle wedge boots are showing up in stores too. Wear them with the slew of cropped pants available now and going forward for winter.

Classic Black & White

3. Classic Black & White

Dressing in Black + White is tres chic for fall.  Don't hesitate to pick up a few pieces in the stores now as there are some great values out there. Look for silky and reflective fabrics that are big trends. These are great pieces to travel with. Pair with white tanks, short sleeve shirts and white flowy blouses, do the the same in black.  These pieces mixed with a few different accessories will make endless outfits for a week! I love this example from Nanette Lepore.

Chain Gang

4. Chain Gang

Chain necklaces and bracelets- These "heavy metal" pieces are a great way to make a statement.  Look for gold and rose gold pieces to carry you through the summer and into winter.

Practical Poncho

5. Practical Poncho

Look for a cute poncho for chilly summer nights- you'll be able to wear this right up until it's time for a winter coat and throughout the winter in a drafty office. Check out Piazza Sempione's silk and cashmere version.

Understated Sexy

6. Understated Sexy

'Lady-like" dressing isn't prudish…it's sexy!  Check out these understated looks by Michael Kors and Marc Jacobs.

Go Geo

7. Go Geo

Geometric prints can be great for all body types and they're all the rage.  Go for a "busier" visual on top  and a monochromatic bottom to draw attention away from any figure flaws on the bottom and vice versa.  If you're petite, try a vertically oriented pattern to lengthen the torso and  smaller graphics as shown in this dress by Oscar de la Renta.

The 'It' Color

8. The 'It' Color

Burnt Orange is the "new" it color.  Try getting a jump start on this hue of the moment that can work for everyone. Try holding the garment up to your face to determine which shade makes your face light up.  This is a super flattering way to carry on a summer tan even when the leaves begin to change! Check out this outfit by Roberto Cavalli and this dress by The Halston Heritage.
