National Running Day: Reasons to Hit the Road

On National Running Day, here are 5 reasons to lace up your sneakers and hit the pavement today — and every day

June 6 is National Running Day. This is the fourth iteration of the event and as the running community has only exploded in recent years, so expect National Running Day to become bigger each year.

So why do people run – and why should you? Here are 5 good reasons for you to get off the couch and put on your sneakers:

1. Running gets you moving

Having a jogging routine is a great motivator. It is simpler than going to the gym – all you need is your sneakers and the gumption to get up and go. Decide to go and get moving.

2. Running gets you outdoors

Sure you can run on a treadmill but running gives you the opportunity to get out in the fresh air and sunshine every day. How often do you just go out and see the world for the sake of just going out? Running lets you do that.

3. Running relieves stress

OK, so maybe it’s not as good as sex for a stress reliever, but if you are consumed with work, or personal problems, a good sweat and a good run can help change your perspective on just about anything. It may not be a problem solver but it’s a great problem alleviator.

4. Running helps you maintain your weight

The more you run the better shape you will be in. It is just that simple. Not only does it burn calories but it also suppresses your appetite and when you run regularly you begin to think about the things you eat a bit more.

5. Running is social or solitary, You decide.

You can run in a race with 50,000 people like I did at the Bolder Boulder or you can head out on a trail by your lonesome and get away from everybody. The choice is yours and you are in control every time you take a run.

So get out and take a run on National Running Day. And the next day, too.
