Goldie Hawn: How MindUP Transforms Kids’ Ability to Learn (VIDEO)

Why are one in three children medicated today? That’s one of the many important questions that caught the attention of actress and philanthropist Goldie Hawn as she sought to learn more about how kids’ brains works and what we can do to help ease stress on their brains and better their everyday lives. The result? A revolutionary MindUP education initiative.

The Hawn Foundation’s signature program, MindUP, is a collection of self-regulatory strategies and skills developed to improve behavior and learning for children. Among the various MindUP skills taught to students, focused attention and increased optimism are key, both of which display the potential to have a long-term impact on brain function and social and emotional behavior.

“This program called MindUP goes into the classroom … the teacher embeds it inside of the classroom and these kids are happier, they’re more attentive, they’re doing better in reading, they’re doing better in math,” Hawn says.

Among other benefits, the program helps children focus, sit to become calm and remedy their own stress. Students become engaged because of the MindUP program – whether they be special-needs children, victims of abuse, children in public or private schools, and even those in medical centers.

Hawn also released a book on the subject, 10 Mindful Minutes, which shows parents, grandparents and teachers how to help shape children’s brains and lead happy lives.

Goldie, I saw you on Katie Couric this week, and really admire what you are doing with children. I have a 25 year old son that sure could have used some of your great help in his early years, and I would like to find out how I go about doing what you are doing. When he was young, I did what I could to learn about alternative modalities, and have been connected to herbs, aromatherapy, hypnosis, and guided imagery ever since, but back then, I was looked at as someone trying to "go against what others thought was right." I have a brother, who taught for years, but finally gave up because of society. He was a great motivator of students, and was even on Oprah as one of his students nominated him.
I do not have a facebook or twitter account as I don't always like what social media does. It would be great to connect some way if possible.Thank you!

Thanks again for making the children special and helping so many to move in the right direction.
