Your body mass index is a combination of your muscle density and your body-fat percentage. So you could be an average weight, but still be very high in body-fat percentage, which is unhealthy, and could lead to diabetes, heart disease and other health problems. A recent Mayo Clinic study has shown that 30 percent of Americans have this phenomenon called Average Weight Fat Syndrome, where Americans are showing that they have too high of a body fat percentage, yet they look normal.
There are two things that you can do to reduce your body fat percentage, and increase your muscle mass. One would be your diet. Try and minimize the things that put on weight – high caloric foods. Second thing would be to do some strength training to improve your muscle density, which will then in turn burn those fat calories.

Fred's comments about being "fat" and still of average weight poses an interesting challenge – I find that I can be below my average weight but still have fat mass – when I do strength training like at Exhale's Core Fusion class (killer!) – I look leaner but may not necessarily loose weight …Thanks Fred for the great tip.
