As a TV anchor for more than 30 years on “The Today Show,” “Dateline NBC,” “CBS Evening News” and “60 Minutes,” Katie Couric is used to creating headlines. Now she is making them.

Katie Couric’s new talk show on ABC, “Katie,” premiered in September, but Couric is continuing in her fight to raise awareness about colorectal cancer, the disease that claimed the life of her husband in 1998. Watch legendary journalist Couric talk about being an advocate:

Co-founder of Stand Up to Cancer (SU2C), Couric also co-founded the National Colorectal Cancer Research Alliance (NCCRA) in 2000 intended to eradicate colorectal cancer by promoting the importance of early medical screening and funding research to develop better tests, treatments, and ultimately a cure.

“To do any kind of advocacy, whether it’s getting a group involved to participate in a walk, whether it’s raising money through a bake sale or other means; anything you can do to say, ‘I’ve got to play a part in conquering this disease.’ Doing something — anything — is the way to go,” Couric said. “There are so many incredibly organizations you can get involved with or you can start your own. That’s what I did.”

Topics like these, among others, are what Couric tackles on her new talk show, “Katie,” which premiered on September 10, 2012, on ABC.

“It’s going to be a one-hour syndicated afternoon talk show. It’s going to hopefully be about intelligent topics, interesting things, fascinating people and what’s going on in the world,” Couric told genConnect’s Vicki Salemi. “It is going to be a place where we can all figure out this crazy, complicated world a little bit better.”
