John Doerr’s Giving Pledge to Donate Half His Fortune
John Doerr is a philanthropist among philanthropist. Doerr and his wife Ann are among 40 of the richest families in the United States who have pledged to donate more than half of their fortunes to charitable causes.
The announcement comes with the launch of The Giving Pledge. Spearheaded by Warren Buffett and Bill and Melinda Gates, the Pledge signifies a promise made by some of America’s billionaires to give a majority of their wealth to organizations and causes. Other billionaires who have taken the pledge include New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg, entertainment executive Barry Diller with wife, fashion designer Diane von Furstenberg, and media mogul Ted Turner.
genConnect caught up with Doerr shortly before we learned of his Giving Pledge, and during our multi-ranging conversation he addressed how a great entrepreneur seeks to make money while also making meaning. “Do not just strive to be successful but achieve a great measure of success and significance,” Doerr said. And we think he has.
