For example, Future Is Now Schools is turning around a school in New Orleans – one of the worst in the city – increasing enrollment and working on revitalizing the community around the school. Meanwhile, Success Academy is working to establish charter schools in mixed-income areas of New York City with diverse neighborhoods – with great success.
“They’re all coming together in schools that, for the first time in years, are integrated by choice,” in comparison to forced integration, Stein said. “Now, a number of charter schools, particularly in New York City, are doing mixed income schools and mixed race and mixed ethnicity schools that are working beautifully.”
