Happy Birthday Dr. Seuss! Read Across America & Mazda Driving Kids to Read

Today is Read Across America Day. Launched by the National Education Association (NEA), the largest teacher’s union in America,  the year-long program focuses on motivating children and teens to read through events, partnerships and reading resources. On Read Across America Day, reading celebrations take place in cities across America in tandem with celebrating the birthday of Dr. Seuss. Thousands of schools, libraries and community centers participate by bringing together kids, teens and books.

Read Across America, entering its 15th year, has partnered with Dr. Seuss’ “The Lorax” film — which opens nationwide March 2 and features voices from Zac Efron, Betty White, Taylor Swift and Danny DeVito — and Mazda North American Operations (MNAO).

Feb. 21 kicked off the beginning of the “Read Across America Tour – Driven by Mazda,” in which sponsors visited more than 20 cities, stopping at public schools and Mazda dealerships to encourage public school students to read.

Mazda has pledged up to $1 million in support of the nation’s public school libraries through a test drive program. For each test drive of a Mazda vehicle between Feb. 21 and April 2, Mazda will donate $25 toward public school libraries nationwide, up to $1 million. Administered by the NEA Foundation, this donation will provide funds to help the nation’s struggling public school libraries.

“The greater importance of our work this summer is our partnership with NEA’s Read Across America Tour,” said Don Romano, chief marketing officer, Mazda North American Operations. “With the involvement of every one of our 640-plus U.S. dealers, we have raised our long-standing commitment to support literacy across the U.S., helping our nation’s children achieve peak performance through the gift of reading.”

The “Read Across America Tour – Driven by Mazda” will focus on sharing the story of Dr. Seuss’ “The Lorax” with students, raising awareness for public schools in need and providing an opportunity for consumers to show that they care.
