Global Networks Are The New Models To Solve Global Issues

[ 0 ] July 11, 2014 |

Don Tapscott, one of the world’s leading authorities on innovation and technology, says a new model for solving global issues is emerging.

WATCH as Tapscott, a Canadian business executive, author, consultant and speaker, specializing in business strategy, organizational transformation and the role of technology in business and society, talks with genConnect at the Aspen Ideas Festival, about how the Internet is playing a transformative role in effecting change on a global scale:

“We have lots of problems in the world,” says Tapscott. “Actually, most of them are not getting better, and some of them – like climate change – are getting worse.”

There are models, such as those created by the United Nations, that work to solve global issues; however, Tapscott says, they aren’t always so successful. For example, the UN includes almost every country in the world and has to take each one’s opinions into consideration. The result is a lot of chatter, he adds, but due to political reasons, not much actually gets done.

Tapscott calls this new model the “Global Solution Networks.” These are multi-stakeholder networks that work together to attack global issues. Tere are 10 different types of these networks, he explains, and each one is a voluntary network that uses the Internet to interact with those individuals and groups that may be interested in what they have to say. These types of networks engage millions of organizations and people on a daily basis. Anyone can support or oppose the networks, but no matter what, they will still remain public.

Tapscott is conducting a research project to better understand these networks and how they work. He says that these networks are governing the Internet and he wants to find out, “if you can govern the Internet that way, what else can you govern?”
