An applicant hoping to break into broadcast journalism absolutely has to have good communication skills and the drive to take initiative, Kiernan says; actual on-the-job skills can always be learned.

So how should one hone their communication skills to boost their chances of getting hired?

Since applying for jobs is so easy now, with the proliferation of the Internet, online job boards, and the ability to send resumes and clips via email, Kiernan says, “part of it is just showing personality in the job search. The people who pop out are those who somehow differentiate themselves.”
