How To Be ‘In Demand’ in Magazine Publishing

Being a successful magazine in today’s digital age takes a lot more than hard work and great content these days.

So how does one go about succeeding in magazine publishing?

“Know your content – know your category, really,” Butler says. “Get your expertise and remember that content today goes through many platforms – print and digital. And you really want to become very familiar with all of those and have skills across the board, because that’s the person that’s in demand today.”

As for what Butler would have done differently in her career? Not much, she says.

“I think you take advantage of opportunities as they come and make the most of every one.” One of the smartest career choices she ever made, early on in her working life, was switching from a public relations track to journalism, which landed her at BHG. She says: “That worked out pretty well!”
