BMX cyclist Connor Fields is at the top of his field heading into the 2012 London Olympics. So how did this 19-year-old develop his talent and passion? His mom actually bought him a BMX bike at the age of seven, hoping he would exert his excess energy in the sport. “I really enjoyed the individualism of BMX,” Fields says, “and the adrenaline rush … thanks mom!”

Fields won the U.S. Men’s BMX trials in June, earning an automatic spot on the three-man team for the 2012 London Games. He credits family, friends and great coaches for getting him to the professional level, where he now also has the additional support of agents, full-time coaches, and others.

His advice for other young BMX hopefuls? “Just have fun – don’t take it too seriously. It’s when you start taking it seriously that it stops being fun.”
