Most multivitamins and supplements do not prevent disease; they might actually contribute to it, argues Dr. David B. Agus, author of The End of Illness. “We spend more on vitamins in our country than we do on medical research,” he says.
Watch Dr. David Agus discuss common health myths and new ideas in disease prevention:
“If you’re wearing shoes that hurt you, wear shoes that don’t because that hurt is inflammation,” he says. “Get your things like your flu shot … Ten years from now the inflammation from the flu will cause a problem in increased heart disease and cancer.”
Eating real food on a regular schedule, snacks included, is also key to disease prevention because our bodies love predictability, he says.

Dr. Agus also advocates:
- Going to bed and waking up at the same time every day, weekends included.
- Taking any prescribed medications at the same time every day.
- Exercising (if you do) at roughly the same time every day.
“To me diseases are verbs not nouns – you’re cancering, you’re heart diseasing,” he says. “I don’t want to give you one thing to change one aspect of you, I want to change all of you.”
