Khan Academy Revolutionizing Education — Online
Khan Academy has 4 million pupils a month from across the globe with its free tutorials; education of the future?
Salman Khan is an Bangladeshi-American educator and founder of the Khan Academy, a free online education platform and not-for-profit organization. He has produced over 2400 videos elucidating a wide spectrum of concepts, mainly focusing on mathematics and the sciences, in his home. His official channel, 'Khan Academy' has, as of June 2011, attracted more than 157,000 subscribers.
Being founder and faculty means Sal's busy setting the vision for the Khan Academy and expanding the library of educational videos.
In late 2004, Khan began tutoring his cousin Nadia in mathematics using Yahoo!'s Doodle notepad. When other relatives and friends sought similar help, he decided it would be more practical to distribute the tutorials on YouTube. Their popularity there and the testimonials of appreciative students prompted Khan to quit his job in finance in 2009 and focus on the tutorials full-time.
Khan outlined his mission as accelerating learning for students of all ages. Khan also plans to extend his 'free school' to cover topics such as English and history. Programs are being undertaken to use Khan's videos to teach those in isolated areas of Africa and Asia.
Before quitting his job as manager of a hedge fund to run the Khan Academy full time, Sal also found time to get three degrees from MIT and an MBA from Harvard.
