About Ellen Dolgen

Ellen Dolgen (aka “E”) is the author of Shmirshky: the pursuit of hormone happiness, a cut-to-the-chase book filled with crucial information and hilarious and heartfelt stories about perimenopause and menopause.

Originally self-published as Shmirshky: think inside the box, within three months its popularity and national media attention led to a buyout from VOICE, an imprint of Hyperion Books. Ellen has appeared on the “The Rachael Ray Show,” “The Doctors,” FOX’s “Good Day New York,” CBS News New York, Oprah Radio, Playboy Radio, NPR's “Tell Me More,” Doctor Radio and dozens of other regional and national media outlets. In 2011, she appeared in a sold-out production of “The Vagina Monologues” in the historic, 730-seat Birch North Park Theater in San Diego and in USA Today’s Your Life Guide to Women’s Health. She appears regularly as a menopause expert and women's wellness guest on KSWB FOX 5 Morning News San Diego, and is a regular guest on the popular radio show "Broadminded" on Sirius XM Radio (Stars XM 107). Ellen is also one of the first regular contributors to debut on the Huffington Post’s latest site, Huff/Post50, targeted to 116 million Americans over the age of 50.

Ellen Dolgen is active in promoting health and wellness in America. She recently launched a Women's Wellness and Awareness program with corporations, health care institutions and other organizations, and she is a founding member of the UC San Diego Health, Recreation & Well-being Executive Development Board. Ellen serves on the Community Advisory Board of Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla and has chaired numerous events for Fresh Start Women’s Foundation, San Diego Hospice, Brandeis University, NARAL, the Phoenix Heart Ball, Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, Weizmann Institute of Science, Angel Charity for Children, Brewster Auxiliary, and Handmaker Home for the Aging. Ellen’s lifelong commitment to philanthropy through board representation, fundraising, and event organization continues with her founding of Shmirshky Universal, which aims to promote women's health and well-being around the world.

Ellen’s previous work includes public relations, fundraising for national political campaigns, corporate representation, investment advisory, hospitality operations, not-for-profit fundraising, and cultural and community leadership. She served as the National Deputy Treasurer of the 1980 Carter-Mondale re-election campaign; a member of Berman and Associates, a Washington, D.C., consulting firm; and National Finance Coordinator for U.S. Senator Henry M. Jackson’s 1976 bid for the Democratic Party’s presidential nomination. She also worked for the national United Jewish Appeal in New York City. Ellen has served on the National Finance Committee of Obama for America since early 2008. During her college years she was the director of public relations for Interstate Motel Corporation in Tucson, Arizona, while attending the University of Arizona. She was subsequently chairperson of the University of Arizona’s Office of Cultural Affairs Advisory Board and served on the Arizona State Workmen’s Compensation Fund Investment Committee. Ellen is founder and president of Shmirshky Universal and is a principal of Dolgen Ventures along with her husband, David. She lives in Coronado, California, and has two adult children, Sarah and Jack.
