Turmeric for Liver Health

Turmeric is a spice, commonly used in Asian food. Curcumin is the yellow-colored molecule derived from turmeric. The root of turmeric has long been used in traditional Asian medicine for it’s antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and improved vigor properties.

A new study included 60 adults with elevated alanine aminotransferase (ALT) levels (a liver enzyme that is produced in higher amounts when the liver is inflamed).

Watch: Delay Aging From Within With 2013′s Top Ingredients

Participants were randomly assigned to take three grams daily of fermented turmeric powder or placebo for 12 weeks.

Compared to the control group, the turmeric group had significantly lower levels of ALT and aspartate aminotransferase (AST), a marker for liver damage.

Great News for Coffee & Green Tea Drinkers!

I have written previously on the benefits of green tea for healthy skin.

A recent large-scale study published in Stroke: Journal of American Heart Association proved that daily consumption of coffee and/or green tea can lower risk of stroke. The study asked over 83,000 (age 45 to 74 years,) Japanese adults about their green tea and coffee drinking habits and followed them for an average of 13 years. Here’s what they found out:

Those who drank about one cup of coffee daily had a 20 percent lower risk of stroke

Those who drank two to three cups of green tea daily had 14 percent lower risk and those who drank four cups had 20 percent lower risk of stroke

A combination of coffee & green tea drinking reduced incidence by 32 percent

Researchers believe the potential protective role of green tea may come from catechins, a well-known antioxidant and anti-inflammatory compound touted for its health properties (including skin). For coffee, chlorogenic acid was believed to be the key chemical to offer this protective effect.

They concluded that regular action of drinking coffee and/or tea benefits the cardiovascular health by keeping blot clots from forming and supporting healthy circulation.

Sleep Less, Gain Weight – Why you should be getting your ZZZ’s

Paula Simpson

Sleep deprivation is a beauty buster. But did you know lack of sleep might cause you to overeat? A recent study conducted at the University of Colorado Boulder provides additional data on how lack of sleep can affect your waistline. Researchers found that those who slept 5 hours a night during a working week gained about 2 pounds more than those who slept about 7 to 8 hours per night. Those who were sleep deprived ate smaller breakfasts and snacked more throughout the day and into the evening. This study coincides with previous ones on sleep deprivation and weight gain tempting these researchers to call out to weight management programs to include sleep promoting lifestyle guidelines for those attempting to lose weight.

genConnect expert and beauty nutritionist Paula Simpson is the go-to source for trends in nutricosmetics, says NewHope360. The trade Web site for the natural beauty industry just named Simpson, who posits a “beauty-from-within” approach to looking and feeling young and gorgeous, to its list of “7 Powerful Women in the Natural Beauty Industry.”

“She’s focused on how the beauty-from-within business will become more sustainable as its presence grows domestically and how consumers will continue to make the connection between health and beauty,” writes NewHope360′s editors.

The seven women who made the list are activists and innovators, trend spotters and trendsetters, according to NewHope360.

“Whether these powerful women are formulating new product lines or advocating for cosmetics safety, they are uniting and shaping the natural and organic personal care industry,” the Web site says.

Although aging is inevitable, there are dietary and supplemental changes you can make that may delay the aging process. Remember that a change in diet or supplements work from the inside, and therefore provide a different route or mechanism of action that a topical product or treatment would offer you.

I have spent the last year traveling internationally and learning about the latest in nutrition and beauty products to support healthful aging. So here are some that I found most impressive, and should be on your radar too!

African Moringa – Taken as a greens powder or using the oil topically, it offers a complete source of nutrition. When used topically, it helps calm inflamed, irritated skin.

Astaxanthin – How much salmon can you really eat to reap the amazing anti-inflammatory and antioxidant benefits of this hot ingredient? Keep this ingredient on your beauty radar!

Sprinkle Chia Seeds on your smoothie for a healthy treat for you and your skin

Chia Seeds – Fiber, healthy fats and easy to add to food or smoothies. A perfect beauty food!

CocoaVia – Love this product! With only 20 to 30 calories, you get 250 milligrams of cocoa flavanols, a clinically proven dose to support healthy circulation, which is very important for a radiant complexion.

Coconut Water – If you are looking to hydrate and replenish your skin, try coconut water. But watch the calories. Coconut water is great when traveling!

Methyl Sulfonyl Methane (MSM) – We are hearing a lot about collagen-based supplements and drinks for healthful skin. Unlike collagen, MSM offers a “vegetarian” source of sulfur to maintain strong disulfide bonds within collagen and elastin fibers to maintain firm skin.

Maritime pine bark extract (Pycnogenol®) – continues to improve its clinical efficacy to support skin health.

Omega 7 – Like Omega 3, it is a component of skin cell membranes and is known to dramatically decrease in aging skin. Is there a new beauty omega on the block?

pTeroPure® – sourced from blueberries, this extract proved that is more readily absorbed into the body over resveratrol. This powerful antioxidant helps to ward off free radicals and supports healthful cellular aging.

Setria® – With age and stress there is a decrease in our naturally occurring antioxidant enzymes: Superoxide Dismutase (SOD), Glutathione and Catalase. Setria is a tripeptide that helps raise the body’s Glutathione levels in tissues. This is one ingredient to look out for in your nutricosmetic.

Paula Simpson

This is an exciting time for the nutritional beauty industry. Although the science and technology of ingredients continues to advance, expect to see products that are easier to incorporate into hectic lifestyles while delivering real results.

Own a spa or hotel and trying to get more customers through the doors who are looking for somewhere to relax and rejuvenate? Internationally recognized nutrition and fitness expert Paula Simpson can help. Email: inquiries@paulasimpson.com

Spa revenue in the United States grew 4.5 percent to $13.4 billion at the end of 2011 from a year earlier, according to an International SPA Association 2012 U.S. Spa industry Study, conducted by PricewaterhouseCoopers.

“Against a background of slow recovery in consumer spending the spa industry has kept pace with modest growth in revenues and visits,” said Colin McIlheney, Global Research Director at PricewaterhouseCoopers. “Revenues are up by 4.5% year-on-year to $13.4 billion. Visits are also up 4.1% to 156 million. Prices have stayed stable. The evidence suggests a volume-driven recovery.”

Some of the strategies spas have implemented to drive demand include: increasing the number of treatment offerings, new retail product offerings, additional spa programs and shorter treatment options.

Paula Simpson can offer a unique perspective to spas and hotels hoping to further boost their sales in this department. As a global formulation, regulatory and branding expert, Paula will help you create cutting-edge natural health products specific to regional market trends and targeted consumer demographics.

Nutricosmetics expert Paula Simpson helps get your skin back on track...

Nutricosmetics expert Paula Simpson explains how food can repair your sun-damaged skin…

Fall might be just around the corner, but a little too much fun in the sun may leave signs of summer on your face. How do you get your skin back on track again? Food can help!

Focus on foods high in vitamins A, C, selenium and omega 3 fatty acids. Turn to fruits and vegetables such as lemons, cantaloupe, kiwi fruit, tomatoes and broccoli for your dose of Vitamin C. Foods rich in selenium like Brazil nuts, oysters and tuna make for great antioxidants. High fat fish such as salmon contain the essential fatty acid omega 3, which helps to moisturize and hydrate the skin from within. Juicing is a great way to get those concentrated nutrients and antioxidants to revitalize post-summer skin.

Related: Antioxidant-Filled Cosmetics You Can Eat

The symptoms might not just show on your face, either. When the summer months come to an end, many of us begin to feel a sense of malaise. As the fall season approaches it is critical to maintain an active lifestyle and positive outlook to beat those dreaded “winter blahs.”

Related: 3 World-Class Spas to Help You Beat the Winter Blues

Many of the symptoms of depression can be directly linked to vitamin and mineral deficiencies in the standard American diet (which is largely comprised of empty carbs, caffeine and sugar). Avoiding depression or recovering from a depressive episode may often be as easy as boosting your consumption of key foods that help regulate brain chemistry.

Scientists at the 244th National Meeting & Exposition of the American Chemical Society presented a study looking at more than 1,700 substances of common foods and their potential effects in enhancing mood.

Related: How Nutrition Influences Your Skin’s Aging Process

In conjunction to similar studies, they found that the chemicals in chocolate, blueberries, raspberries, strawberries, teas and omega 3’s have a positive effect on mood and may help to smooth out mood swings. The study looked specifically at chemical structures in food and how they are similar to approved anti-depressant medications. They concluded that although food is not a substitute for prescribed medications, eating specific foods more often and maintaining a healthy lifestyle does have a direct positive effect one’s mood and outlook.

Men listen up! Omega-3′s can do more than just hydrate the skin. Click here to find out how they can support sexual health…

As an educator and product development expert, I am consistently on the lookout for evolving trends and premium ingredients for healthy aging and beauty. This spring has been a busy time for tradeshows and here are three trends/ingredients that I think you should know about!

Related: How Nutrition Influences Your Skin’s Aging Process

Move Over Resveratrol, is there a new kid on the block?

Pterostilbene is a compound structurally similar to resveratrol and is also be found in grapes, blueberries, and other small fruits, as well as the bark of some trees. It belongs to a class of compounds known as phytoalexins, which are produced by plants in response to pathogen infection. There is growing interest in pterostillbene as clinical data continues to prove its superior stability and bioavailability (over resveratrol) and diverse mechanism of action against oxidative damage and aging in healthy population. Already sold in leading nutraceutical brands (as pTeroPureä), pterostilbene is quickly making it’s way into the healthy aging, nutricosmetic and cosmeceuticals market in a big way!

Omega 7 for Healthy Skin?

We have heard about the health promoting properties of Omega 3 fatty acids. But did you know there is another fatty acid that is breaking ground for healthy skin?

Paula Simpson

Palmitoleic acid (Omega 7) is an infrequently referenced fatty acid that is a primary building block in skin and mucous membranes. You can obtain small amounts through diet but can also look to natural sources for topical or oral use. Currently, seabuckthorn berry is commonly used as a source of Omega 7 in skincare and nutricosmetic brands. Clinical studies have shown beneficial effects of sea buckthorn (as a source of Omega 7,) on inflammation, immunity and promoting healthy skin. Watch out for new and evolving ingredients offering a source of Omega 7, including African Moringa and from microalgae species Nannochloropsis.

Cocoa Flavanols for Healthy Aging and Skin?

For some time, I have been aware of the health benefits of cocoa flavanols as an antioxidant and promotinghealthy circulation (including within the skin). However, I am also aware that their stability if often destroyed during processing, particularly in supplements. I was recently impressed to see the brand CocoaVia© come out with a product that provides a clinically proven bioavailable form of cocoa flavanols to support healthy circulation and aging. I like the convenience of the stick packs and the different flavors offered (from unsweetened dark chocolate to summer citrus). An easy way to get the good from cocoa without the added calories!

Memorial Day weekend and ‘Don’t Fry Day’ mark the beginning of the tanning season; here are some tips to prevent skin cancer while having fun in the sun

Memorial Day means summer is right around the corner. But too much fun in the sun can wreak havoc on your skin and even cause skin cancer.

The National Council on Skin Cancer Prevention has designated the Friday before Memorial Day,May 25, 2012, as “Don’t Fry Day” to encourage sun safety awareness by reminding everyone to protect their skin while enjoying the outdoors. Health and beauty expert Paula Simpson also recommends several antioxidants that can also help you battle skin cancer, not just on “Don’t Fry Day,” but every day.

Skin cancer is on the rise in the United States; the American Cancer Society estimates that one American dies every hour from skin cancer. More than 2 million cases of non-melanoma skin cancer are found in this country each year. Melanoma, the most serious type of skin cancer, accounted for about 68,130 cases of skin cancer in 2010 alone.

The Environmental Protection Agency says that on this “Don’t Fry Day,” remember to Slip! Slop! Slap!…and Wrap when you’re outdoors — slip on a shirt, slop on sunscreen of SPF 15 or higher, slap on a hat, and wrap on sunglasses. And follow these tips to protect your skin:

Avoid sun burning, intentional tanning, and using tanning beds.

Apply sunscreen generously

Wear sun-protective clothing, a wide-brimmed hat, and sunglasses.

Seek shade.

Use extra caution near water, snow, and sand.

Get vitamin D safely through food and vitamin D supplements.

Paula Simpson

The American Cancer Society offers more protection tips here.

Paula Simpson, an internationally known health, fitness and beauty expert, says a growing body of research concludes that certain antioxidants may further protect the skin from the permanent damage cause by sun exposure. On the top of list: Green tea, cocoa, polyphenols from berries, cantaloupe, and tomatoes (particularly tomato paste as it is lycopene rich), have shown in human clinical studies to help reduce the post-inflammatory response cause by sun exposure and may help to protect the skin cells from permanent cellular damage.

“You should always apply a topical SPF on a daily basis, but if you are seeking added protection for your skin, you may want to implement certain antioxidants into your diet and/or supplement with a antioxidant rich formulation to optimize skin protection both topically and internally!” Simpson says.

So before you play this weekend, slather on the sunscreen and a hat. Your skin will thank you!

New partly ingestible io Beauty line prepares to launch on QVC; celebrity nutritionist Paula Simpson says consumers should not blindly buy into edible beauty products that promise a more youthful glow

Tired of slathering creams and cosmetics packed with antioxidants on your skin for a more youthful glow? A new line of cosmetics is coming out that you actually can eat.

But Paula Simpson, celebrity nutritionist and formulation expert, warns consumers to not buy in blindly to such products, and to do your research to ensure such products really do have some health value.

Related: How Nutrition Influences Your Skin’s Aging Process

Sue Devitt, an Australian makeup artist with a celebrity clientele and the Miss Universe Organization’s official dietician, Tanya Zuckerbrot, are launching a new beauty product on QVC in February loaded with antioxidants and minerals that is supposed to be great for your skin. The $38 Beauty Booster is part of the duo’s new partly ingestible io Beauty collection that “works from the inside out”; it can be drizzled over yogurt and into club soda, or eaten alone – and it’s calorie-free. The amount of liquid in two droppers of Beauty Booster is supposed to have more antioxidant value than five servings of fruits and vegetables. And results are promised within 28 days.

Devitt and Zuckerbrot’s new products are the latest in a recent line of edible products — sunscreen, cologne, cosmetics and other beauty items – purported to make you look and feel better.

Paula Simpson

But Paula, who is a staunch advocate of natural supplements and remedies to improve your skin, libido and overall health, warns not to take such products at face value.

“As a nutritionist, nutricosmetic formulator and educator, I have spent much time working with companies to develop effective nutritional beauty products. Nutrition is the foundation towards optimal health, but with today’s fast-paced lifestyles, it is hard to acquire an optimal diet on a daily basis. This is why functional beverages such as antioxidant-enriched waters have become so popular within the nutricosmetic sector,” Paula says.

“Recent human clinical studies have shown that consuming concentrated doses of certain antioxidants do in fact help protect the skin from damaging free radicals (accelerators in skin aging), which are produced in the skin when exposed to the sun or other environmental stressors,” Paula adds. “However, because this is a fairly new trend, many products coming to market are manufactured for ‘commercial appeal’ over the true health benefits. Therefore, choose your product wisely. Do your research on the manufacturer, clinical evidence available and formula ingredients/dosage before considering supplementation.”

Good advice to follow for all of your beauty purchasing decisions!

Too many supplements may be harmful to older women’s health; celebrity nutritionist Paula Simpson weighs in with her thoughts on a new study

There’s news today supporting the idea that older women should get their nutrients from food, rather than supplements, and when it comes to vitamins in pill form, less is more.

Paula Simpson.

A study published in the Archives of Internal Medicine found that women in their 50s and 60s who took more nutritional supplements than their bodies needed were more likely to be at an increased risk of death.

The study backs up the idea that women who are well-nourished from a well-balanced diet don’t need to take additional supplements. Multivitamins, folic acid, vitamin B6, magnesium, zinc, copper and iron, in particular, appeared to increase mortality risk. Supplemental iron had the strongest link to mortality, while calcium was associated with decreased risk.

Celebrity nutritionist and formulation expert Paula Simpson noted that the study may be flawed in that other health variables were not considered, but did agree that “you can have too much of a good thing.”

“More importantly, if one chooses to take supplements, they should work under the guidance of a qualified health professional,” Simpson added. “With proper assessment, you can best determine which supplements are best for their individual needs. Also, many supplement companies offer a wealth of information and clinical data on their websites. It always good to do a little background research on the product. Lastly, it [the study] states that those who supplemented with iron had an increased mortality risk. Iron is a mineral that can accumulate in the tissues in the body and actually creates oxidative stress in the system. Therefore, iron should only be considered and recommended if someone is truly deficient.”

So, as with any vitamins or pills you may be thinking of taking, consult your health professional first!

Adequate fluid intake is probably the last thing you would think about when trying to manage your weight.

Your body is close to 70 percent water and if you are even slightly dehydrated then your body will secrete a hormone (aldosterone) causing water and salt retention. So if you are trying to lose weight, stay hydrated!

Try to following tips to keep bloating to a minimum:

• Eat raw foods more often! Fruits and vegetables are naturally composed of water and minerals such as potassium to naturally hydrate the body and help to reduce sodium retention

• Limit your intake of diuretics such as coffee, alcohol and diet sodas. Try to replace these with herbal teas, lemon and hot water more often.

• When doing aerobic exercise, aim to replenish your water intake ½ to 1 cup every 15 minutes.

• On a daily basis, try to consume 8 glasses of water to offset daily fluid losses through breathing, activity and urine.

This piece was written by Paula Simpson, a celebrity nutritionist and formulation expert, discusses some of the natural remedies for decreased libido in men and women.

While statistics show that sexual dysfunction or decreased libido is common in both men and women, it is a topic that many people are hesitant to discuss. Certain illness, fatigue, lack of certain hormones or psychological conditions such as depression and excess stress can dampen sexual interest. Also, commonly overlooked factors include insomnia or lack of sleep, which lead to fatigue. Fortunately, in most cases, it is treatable with certain lifestyle modifications.

Paula Simpson

Nutirition is one place to start.

Many health experts propose that by increasing the intake of certain foods, one can improve libido and desire in both men and women. On top of diet, many are looking to natural remedies through unique supplement formulations to boost their sexual desire. Most recently, Penthouse jumped on this bandwagon and recently launched their liquid “Libido Shots” for men and women. The company purports their formulations contain ingredients such as B vitamins, amino acids, caffeine and herbal extracts that are “specifically designed to encourage pleasurable response when taken 20 minutes before physical activity.”

With Penthouse, there are many different libido supplements in the market. And although they are considered “natural remedies,” many contain ingredients that may be dangerous to health, such as caffeine, especially for those with cardiovascular conditions. Before considering a supplement, be sure to consult with your healthcare practitioner to ensure there are no contraindications with either medications or health conditions.

According to Marenna Lindberg, author of the book, The Orgasmic Diet, there factors that can influence healthy sexual functioning in women include: a diet high in protein, low in simple sugars and void of caffeine; moderate fats; fish oil supplementation; dark chocolate; and exercises such as Kegels. The author believes this will help to stimulate female libido by providing:

1) Sufficient free testosterone

2) Balance dopamine-serotonin levels

3) Promote healthy genital circulation and improve muscle tone

A healthy lifestyle and good nutrition are key components to maintaining a strong reproductive system. Below are some top aphrodisiac foods for men and women if you are looking to spice up your libido!

Chillies & Ginger: Help to stimulate circulation. Both have been used traditionally in Asian medicine to stimulate energy flow (chi) in the body. Because of their potency, a small amount is all that is needed to add to dishes!

Oysters: They are extremely rich in vitamin B12, vitamin D, zinc, and iron – common vitamins and minerals. When males are deficient in the trace mineral zinc, sperm quality is negatively affected1 and levels of testosterone decrease, resulting in lowered sexual capacity and drive. Oysters also contain dopamine, a hormone that encourages sexual satisfaction.

Nuts: In general, nuts are very high in the amino acid, arginine, which is a precursor of nitric oxide in the body. Nitric oxide allows for our blood vessels to dilate, increasing blood flow throughout our body (including blood flow to genitial area).

Watermelons: Watermelons are a rich source of citrulline, an amino acid that can be made into arginine, which then gets converted to nitric oxide. Remember to eat the rind, since this is where most of the citrulline is found.

Asparagus: Asparagus is a great source of iron, zinc, B vitamins and vitamin E. In particular, vitamin E is involved in stimulating the production of sex hormones, which then prompts an increase in sex drive for both men and women.

Chocolate: Chocolate contains phenylethylamine which helps to release dopamine, which in turn stimulates the production of the “cuddle hormone,” known as oxytocin. Indulge in dark chocolate 75 percent or higher, as it contains more antioxidant potency and less sugar.

Avocados: An excellent source of vitamin B6 to increase male hormone production, and potassium to regulate a woman’s thyroid gland, avocados play a role in boosting libido for both sexes.

Nutmeg: Used traditionally to boost libido, sprinkle some on your cappuccino!

Celery: Raw celery boosts production of androsterone, an odorless hormone released through male perspiration. Androsterone acts as a pheromone.

Another expert’s views: What does a doctor think about low libido? We asked Dr. Sara NasserZadeh, a psychosexual therapist, co-author of The Orgasm Answer Guide and board member of the World Association for Sexual Health weighs in with the medical, mental aspects of decreased libido.

Dr. Sara NasserZadeh

“The starting point for this condition is very important,” explains Dr. NasserZadeh. “For example, if a person has always had low sexual desire, she/he might have different underlying factors to be addressed than a person who is experiencing this condition as a sudden change, gradually over time, or only within a specific relationship. Also, sometimes, lack of sexual desire or the behavioral pattern that goes with it serves a purpose in the person’s life.”

On formulations to combat decreased libido, such as Penthouse’s “Libido Shots,” Dr. NasserZadeh says: ”Judging by the ingredients, which are mostly stimulants (i.e. increasing the heart beat and level of alertness), one could imagine that it might work to get the person interested in the physical part of sex. After all, sex is a physical activity, it is like having an energy drink before going to the gym! Or, because it increases the blood circulation, it might increase the chance of responsive arousal (still physically driven not emotionally or mentally). So I not sure if it would be the ‘cure’ for the decrease of sexual desire. Imagine you don’t fancy your partner, would drinking this magical shot change your mind about him/her?! I wish it did and many of my clients would have lived a happier life!

“If I have a client with this condition, I would definitely look at physiological, medical, relational and, of course, lifestyle all together. There is still a lot to be learned about the mechanism of sexual desire, especially in women. You probably heard the news of a drug in development by the pharmaceutical company Boehringer Ingelheim, which was being explored among women who experienced low sexual desire, but the multi-factorial nature of this condition put a halt on its development last year. Therefore, I would be very careful suggesting one solution for such a complex condition.”

Here’s another reason to raise your glass and celebrate the allure of great vino: red wine may help protect you against sunburn.

Spanish scientists discovered that the flavonoids found in grapes, which make red wine, help block chemical changes in the body associated with causing skin damage. Ultraviolet (UV) rays emitted by the sun are the leading environmental cause of skin problems, causing skin cancer, sunburn and solar erythema, as well as premature aging of the dermis and epidermis. The flavonoids in grapes and wine help prevent the skin from forming “reactive oxygen species (ROS)” molecules, which alter key cellular functions and may result in cell death. ROS react with UV rays to destroy cells and cause sunburn.

Paula Simpson, a celebrity nutritionist and formulation expert, notes that this study is just the latest in a series showing that routine consumption of certain naturally occurring antioxidants may provide additional protection against the harmful effects of UV radiation within the skin.

The study, published in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry, supports other research demonstrating that human skin can be protected against UV radiation by using plant-derived antioxidants. Cosmetics and drugs containing grape compounds are already on the market, but the way in which they react with cells was not easily understood until now, researchers said. This could lead to more companies trying to replicate the effect in their cosmetic products.

The study suggests that these “encouraging results should be taken into consideration in clinical pharmacology using plant-based polyphenolic extracts to develop new photoprotection skin products,” said Marta Cascante, a biochemist at the University of Barcelona (Spain) and director of the research project. ”This study supports the idea of using these products to protect the skin from cell damage and death caused by solar radiation, as well as increasing our understanding of the mechanism by which they act.”

“The concept of ‘systemic photo-protection’ by dietary means is gaining momentum,” Simpson said. “As the skin is continuously exposed to the sun and in the absence of topically applied SPFs, the skin is dependent solely upon its internal defense system. There is a growing body of research showing that specific micronutrients and antioxidants may potentially modulate and destroy thosereactive oxygen species and cellular destructive pathways produced by sun exposure.”

Simpson is a huge proponents of the power of antioxidants when it comes to maintaining healthy skin.

“Antioxidants should be considered as a key contributor in strengthening internal photo-protective mechanisms,” she continues. “When used in combination with topical sunscreens, antioxidants may help to support the skin for ongoing resistance and lifelong protection.”

Specifically, antioxidants work to:

Increase ROS scavenging activity

Reduce inflammation

Stimulate immunity

Inhibit hyper-pigmentation associated with UVR exposure (through tyrosinase inhibition – enzyme that stimulates melanin production)

Paula Simpson

Plant Polyphenols

Simpson also had this to say about plant polyphenols and their skin benefits:

“Polyphenols are a large family of naturally occurring plant products that are widely distributed in plant foods. Dietary sources of polyphenols are onions (flavonols); cacao, grape seeds (proanthocyanidins); tea, apples and red wine (flavonols and catechins); citrus fruits (flavanones); berries and cherries (anthocyanidins); and soy (isoflavones).

“Studies have shown the efficacy of naturally occurring polyphenols against UV radiation-induced inflammation, oxidative stress, DNA damage and suppression of immune responses. These protective benefits are mainly due to mitigating the effects of reactive oxygen species that contribute to UVR induced molecular reactions. It is, however, suggested that routine consumption of polyphenols is required to provide efficient protection as their bioavailability is relatively poor and they are metabolized quickly in the system.”

Every once in awhile I like to take a break from the usual blogs and highlight some recent hot topics of interest that you may not be aware of. Here are some of the most recent findings that have heightened my interest to learn more. I hope you find them interesting too.

FDA Attempts to Strengthen Regulation of Dietary Supplements

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regulates dietary supplements under a different set of regulations than those covering conventional foods and drug products (prescription and over-the-counter). Recently, the FDA released new guidelines for supplement manufacturers in order to strengthen regulatory control and consumer safety. Although many are debating the effectiveness of this guideline, it should be noted that many supplement manufacturers already follow stringent quality control guidelines and it is therefore important to do some background research on the supplement company you are considering.

Moreover, seek products that are backed by health professionals who have no commercial endorsement with the manufacturing company. Watch out for outrageous claims, proprietary blends and/or products that do not provide a detailed supplement facts panel.

Diet Soda Causes Weight Gain?

If you think that drinking diet soda is helping you save calories, you may be wrong. The University of Texas researched diet soda consumption over 10 years and found that people who drank two or more cans of diet drinks a day saw their waist measurements expand five times faster than those who never touch the stuff.

The researchers believe that the consumption of diet sodas encourage a sweet tooth, interfere with appetite and even damage key brain cells. If you remember, during the 1990s, studies came out giving the opposite results, leading many to switch from sugar-laden beverages to artificially sweetened sodas. My opinion, keep it simple and stick with water!

Just 2 Ounces of Nuts Per Day to Regulate Blood Sugar?

Researchers from St. Michaels Hospital in Toronto found that consuming two ounces of nuts daily as a replacement for carbohydrates proved effective at glycemic and serum lipid control for people with Type 2 diabetes. The research, published by the journal, Diabetes Care, concluded that by taking just 2 ounces of raw, unsalted mixed nuts per day had benefits for balancing blood sugars and lipids and may help better manage diabetes and help to control weight.

Red Wine Ingredient Resveratrol, Hot Anti-Aging Ingredient?

A recent review of human clinical research on Resveratrol conducted at the University of Florida confirms that Resveratrol is safe for human consumption, improves blood flow and insulin resistance, and decreases oxidative stress and inflammation in humans. As we are aware of the ill health effects that chronic inflammation has on our health, Resveratrol continues to prove effective in combating inflammation both within the body and the skin.

As strange as it sounds, a new research study published in the FASEB Journal, suggests that the “healthy” ingredient in red wine, Resveratrol, may prevent the negative effects that spaceflight and sedentary lifestyles have on people. As many of us try to maintain a healthy body composition as we age, this could be something of interest for future research. Food for thought … or drink to that!

A new report from the EWG may confuse consumers, but Paula Simpson says the best way to avoid foods with toxins is to buy organic

In order to help reduce our exposure to pesticides through diet, the Environmental Working Group (EWG,) just released their latest report on the most chemically laden vs. cleanest produce. Updated from their original report in 2010, it has changed slightly as apples are slated the most toxic of all (vs celery in 2010.)

The EWG also states that by choosing foods from the “clean list” you can potentially reduce your exposure to chemicals by up to 90%!

But not everyone is happy with report, stating it is misleading and may confuse consumers on the health benefits of fruits and vegetables.

As we are aware of the many health benefits surrounding fruits and vegetables (but are also informed of latest and potentially dangerous innovations in food technology,) this could be a useful and health protective tool. Why wouldn’t we want to reduce our exposure to dietary chemicals and toxins that may, over time, have a negative impact on our total health?

My recommendation: choose foods locally grown (organic preferentially,) and in season. To further reduce your exposure to chemicals, use a natural based fruit and veggie wash!

Will you consider changing your produce choices now?

Just in time for summer, Nutritionist Paula Simpson shares tips on naturally eliminating toxins and slimming down

Just in time for summer, Nutritionist Paula Simpson shares tips on naturally eliminating toxins and slimming down

A radiant complexion and healthy weight start with balanced nutrition, efficient digestion, and regular elimination of wastes/toxins. Detoxification is the body’s natural, ongoing process of eliminating toxins from the body. This elimination occurs through the skin, liver, intestines, and kidneys (the majority taking place in the liver and digestive system). A diet that lacks antioxidants and critical nutrients may impair our natural ability to detoxify and eliminate these chemicals. This “body burden” over time may lead to a poor quality of life, impaired immunity, and a sluggish metabolism or weight gain.

The good news is there are some foods you can choose more often to naturally detoxify the body and help slim your waistline! Consider some of the following:

Pre/Probiotics (active cultures) found in Yogurt

These active cultures – cleanses and supports the digestive system, reduces bloating and supports healthy immunity. Also a good source of protein, calcium and CLA (Conjugated linoleic acid) has been found in clinical studies to help stimulate fat metabolism, especially around the waistline.

Cinnamon

Healthy blood sugars are critical to help reduce cravings , maximize energy levels and maintain a healthy weight. With just a ½ tsp per day, Cinnamon has been shown to lower LDL’s (bad cholesterol,) and balance blood sugar in those with diabetes and metabolic syndrome. It also adds a wonderful aroma and flavor; add it to your smoothies, yogurts or oatmeal.

Raw Diet Fruits & Veggies

Antioxidants – broccoli, melon, tomatoes, carrots, berries, dark leafy greens contain potent antioxidants proven to ward off damaging free radicals. For a general reference, check out the ORAC Scale of fresh produce to help maximize your antioxidant intake. They are also great appetite suppressants. The time it takes to chew them gives your body time to realize if it is full.

Rice, Nut or Soy Milk Nutrient packed with calcium, protein, vitamin D and fiber. Choosing a serving per day will help to satisfy hunger by balancing blood sugar levels and thereby minimizing food cravings (generally triggered by low blood sugar levels.)

Green & Oolong Tea

Although there is debate on whether Green tea does help to burn belly fat, it is loaded with antioxidants and contains L Theanine. L-theanine is a unique amino acid found only in the tea plant. L-theanine may help relieve stress by inducing a relaxing effect without drowsiness. For those who are trying to minimize stress related cravings, this may be the tea for you!

Capsaicin

The compound that makes peppers hot, shown to significantly boost metabolism after a meal.

Fiber

Helps to maintain healthy blood sugar levels and controls appetite

Skin cancer: Health and beauty expert Paula Simpson on how green tea, berries and tomatoes can help boost your defenses

Skin cancer: Health and beauty expert Paula Simpson on how green tea, berries and tomatoes can help boost your defenses

Did you know May is Skin Cancer Awareness Month?

As skin cancers are reaching epidemic promotions, we may need to refocus our efforts in best protecting the health and appearance of our skin from the damaging effects of chronic sun exposure.

Over time, ultraviolet rays are well known to be the causal factor in premature aging, inflammatory skin conditions and skin cancers. Topical sunscreens protect the skin from ultraviolet rays by scattering or absorbing the rays before they can cause damage to the skin cells. However, as we forget to apply or reapply our sunscreens (or even miss certain areas), there may be an additional way for you to help protect the health of your skin.

A growing body of research concludes that certain antioxidants may further protect the skin from the permanent damage cause by sun exposure.

So what does this mean? First of all, you should always apply a topical SPF on a daily basis, but if you are seeking added protection for your skin, you may want to implement certain antioxidants into your diet and/or supplement with a antioxidant rich formulation to optimize skin protection both topically and internally!

Skin cancer has hit too close to home for Meghan McCain, so she’s using her star power in a new “naked” ad campaign to encourage us to take proper steps to prevent it.

Being out in the sun sans sunscreen not only increases your chance of getting skin cancer, but it also speeds up your skin’s aging process. genConnect beauty and nutrition expert Paula Simpson offers helpful information on other factors that age your skin, and what you can do to protect it and keep it looking younger.

McCain, daughter of Arizona senator and former presidential hopeful John McCain and celebrity in her own right, is using her name recognition to help bring attention to a cause near and dear to her heart: skin cancer. Both of her parents have had the disease. Stars of the commercial, which is part of the Style Network’s campaign to recognize May as Skin Cancer Awareness Month, stress the importance of donning sunscreen whenever one goes outside.

But McCain’s “naked” appearance is getting some attention.

“Pundits in DC can calm themselves. I filmed a skin cancer PSA in a strapless juicy tube dress. All you can see is my collar bone,” she wrote in a Twitter post. “Both my parents have had skin cancer, everyone should be aware of the extreme dangers the sun presents and how simply using sunscreen is.”

You should also steer clear of the sun to slow your skin’s aging process. Paula Simpson, who has over 15 years of experience in formulation and program development for the Nutraceutical and Medical Aesthetic Industry, points out that factors such as smoking, prolonged and unprotected sun exposure, poor diet, improper hygiene, inattention to skin care, and stress can accelerate aging. “Typically, however, wrinkling and dry or irritated skin marked by dyspigmentation are usually a result of sun damage,” Simpson points out. And this aging can begin in your thirties! Sun damage and other environmental effects compounded over the years may later add dyschromias and other pigmentation issues.

Simpson offers many ways you can protest your body’s largest organ – including proper nutrition, to nourish your body from inside, out.

“Due to the incredible nutrient demands the skin places on the body, it is hard to ignore the role of nutrition and its potential impact on skin health,” Simpson says.

Aging is an ongoing process that generally begins at around age 30. A number of factors contribute to aging, both intrinsic factors that cannot be controlled, and extrinsic factors that can be modified. Factors such as smoking, prolonged and unprotected sun exposure, poor diet, improper hygiene, inattention to skin care, and stress can accelerate aging. Genetics and hormonal changes also play a role. Ultimately, with aging, there is a loss of natural oils, hydration, elasticity, fat, and collagen in skin, leading to dry, sagging skin without volume. It is not possible to stop the aging process; however, it can be delayed.

In a youth-obsessed and image-conscious society, it is becoming increasingly important to look as good as one feels, or at least to portray that one looks well, even in the presence of illness. This point underscores the idea that beauty comes from within, and that the best approach to feeling great and looking better is one that addresses the internal foundation upon which the external visage is based. This is one of the primary reasons why a holistic approach to wellness and age management is essential. This philosophy helps to improve the end result which is enhanced when a number of complementary steps are taken, such as a proper nutrition, appropriate skin care, and regular exercise.

Notwithstanding, with the plethora of role models and public personas from the sports, entertainment, fashion, and beauty industries displaying youthful features, it is no surprise that women and men of all ages are becoming increasingly aware of the merits or benefits of looking fabulous at any age. Attraction to beauty is global, no matter how beauty is defined. Everyone wants to feel attractive and therefore, beautiful. There is no judgment that can be placed on that. It is not superficial or vain; it is reality, and this reality has economic, psychological, and social ripple effects in numerous cultures, whether they are recognized or not.

Attractiveness implies health. The investment in “looking good” may be protected to a certain extent with proper skin care, adequate exercise, stress reduction, and appropriate nutrition. Depending upon the age, some of these factors may require more or less attention and modification. Although aging is generally stated to begin by age 30, early signs of facial aging may occur in the 20s. These signs may become prematurely prominent in the setting of smoking, prolonged, unprotected ultraviolet light exposure, and improper diet. Typically, however, wrinkling and dry or irritated skin marked by dyspigmentation are usually a result of sun damage. In one’s 30s, fine wrinkles may appear around the eyes and dynamic rhytids, or wrinkles that are caused by facial muscle action may begin to appear around the eyes, between the eyebrows and at the forehead. In addition, the overall lines of the face may begin to slope downward. “Excess” or loose skin may become evident the upper eyelids, and the nasolabial folds or “laugh lines” may deepen. Volume loss may start to occur at the malar or cheek area.

The fourth decade brings loss of elasticity and cohesiveness of the tissue planes, leading to sagging skin. Sun damage and other environmental effects compounded over the years may add dyschromias and other pigmentation issues. The cheeks experience further loss of volume, resulting in flattening and loss of youthful facial contours. The texture of the skin may be rough and dry, due to loss of hyaluronic acid and natural skin oils. Hair loss may also begin to be an issue in the 40s, with temporal thinning typical of an aging scalp. In the 50s, the downward vector of facial aging continues, with the corners of the eye sloping vertically and laterally. The nasal tip may droop, and the lips may be marked by thinness as well as wrinkling at the upper and lower lips. Wrinkles may appear deeper, the skin thinner, and the hair grey and finer. In the sixth and seventh decades onward, these changes become more pronounced, as the degenerative process of aging takes its toll on various tissue soft the face and body.

Visible skin aging begins around 30 years of age. The aging process affects skins structure, function and appearance. These may include:

• Decreased capillary circulation
• Epidermal thinning
• Sluggish cellular turnover
• Decreasing collagen and elastin fibers
• Abnormal water binding (hydration)
• Decreased lipid content
• Facial bone loss

“If You Feel Well, You Will Look Well”

The skin is the largest, all embracing organ of our body. Internally, it protects all biochemical and physiological functions, while externally it is the barrier against chemical and mechanical insults. The skin is also the “organ of appeal” and is the first image that others see of us. If the skin is healthy and vibrant, this is a good reflection of one’s total health and well being.

Although the skin appears smooth and delicate, it is actually a complicated organ with many grooves, layers and biochemical functions that work synergistically to renew and repair itself. As we age, the physiochemical homeostasis of the skin becomes compromised, leaving it more susceptible to intrinsic and extrinsic stressors that ultimately degrade it’s structure and function. Extrinsic stressors can have a profound impact on accelerated skin aging. Environmental insults contribute to the generation of free radicals and that stimulate the inflammatory process in the skin. UV rays have the most dramatic effect on skin aging as it initiates a complex series of biochemical reactions in human skin. Furthermore, UV causes depletion of cellular antioxidants and antioxidant enzymes (SOD, catalase), initiates DNA damage, suppresses the immune system and causes increased synthesis and release of pro-inflammatory mediators from skin cells. Over time, these effects degrade skin’s structure and homeostasis, ultimately leading to permanently damaged skin cells.

As skin is the “visual” organ, the beauty industry’s primary objective is to delay the skin aging process with sophisticated topical interventions to combat the degradative mechanisms. However, a critical, and often ignored component (in North America) to support the health and beauty of skin is nutrition.

Diet plays an important role to play in many skin disorders, and skin health professionals are frequently faced with the difficulty of separating myth from fact when it comes to dietary advice for their clients. Due to the incredible nutrient demands the skin places on the body, it is hard to ignore the role of nutrition and its potential impact on skin health. Further, a growing body of clinical studies show the typical North American diet challenges us to obtain those nutrients most pertinent to skin health and, in fact, may aggravate the skin condition.

Based upon current data, the following dietary guidelines for skin should be considered:

-Low glycemic diet – Epidemiologic studies suggest that dietary factors such as Glycemic Load may be involved in stimulating insulin resistance and inflammatory skin conditions (such as acne.) The glycemic index measures how rapidly different foods make your blood sugar rise, such as simple carbohydrates that are quickly absorbed into the blood stream over stimulating insulin production and may eventually lead to insulin resistance. Following a high glycemic and processed diet has recently been linked to triggering a chronic inflammatory response within the skin/body. Insulin resistance and inflammation are proposed to offset sebum production, malformation in collagen and excite the epidermal growth factor receptor, triggering inflammatory skin conditions such as adult acne.

-Up your ratio of Omega 3 rich foods – Those diets higher in omega 3s (such as the Mediterranean diet) have fewer chronic skin conditions such as psoriasis. Omega 3s naturally lubricate the skin and hair and also help to reduce redness and inflammation in the skin.

-Seek out antioxidant rich foods more often - As discussed, the free radical theory of aging proposes that as we get older and are continually exposed to stressors, our bodies become less efficient in neutralizing harmful free radicals that may permanently damage healthy cells (including skin cells). For some time, nutrition experts have recommended choosing foods that are “nutrient/antioxidant dense” over foods with little health protective benefits. This is also true for skin health. Clinical studies have shown that catechins from green tea, anthocyanins from berries and red cabbage, bioflavonoids from citrus, carotenoids such as lycopene and lutein from tomatoes, reservratrol from red wine and genistein from soy offer potent secondary antioxidants that protect the skin cells from free radical damage. By including these types of foods more often in the diet, studies have shown that their additional antioxidant protection is significant, particularly with regards to photo protection. The downfall of this is that they are quickly neutralized and therefore must be regularly consumed to offer these protective health benefits.

-Super foods/cleansing programs – Concentrated greens, such as wheatgrass, to juicing programs and sophisticated nutraceutical formulations are quickly gaining popularity to help manage skin health and wellness. The philosophy of cleansing programs is to “super charge” the body with nutrients that support the key eliminative pathways (liver, digestion, lungs, kidneys and skin), all while giving the body a rest from traditionally hard to digest foods and toxins found in our diet. By incorporating a nutritionally balanced cleansing program, this may help to remove toxicities that build up within our system (including the skin) over time. Cleansing programs may help to minimize skin irritation while supporting the healthy functioning of the key eliminative pathways and re-energizing our bodies.

-Nutritional supplementation (aka “Nutricosmetics”) – The most rapidly growing category in healthy aging is the use of oral products promoting beauty from within (Nutricosmetics). To work along with topical treatments and programs, these products are developed with specific nutrients to support healthy skin, hair, and nails. Although proper nutrition and a balanced eating plan is a starting point for optimal health, oral beauty supplements offer the right nutrients for healthier skin (to get this amount of nutrients from diet alone can be very difficult to attain on a daily basis). These products generally contain vitamins, minerals, botanical extracts, and antioxidants in their composition that have an effect on overall skin health and beauty.

Aging is an inevitable process. It cannot be stopped, for our bodies are temporary and are on borrowed time. Nevertheless, aging may proceed gracefully and graciously, given that there are numerous options for health, wellness, and therefore, beauty. Nutrition plays a vital role, and in absence of a whole foods, plant-based, non-processed diet, oral supplements as nutricosmetics may provide an important link to the fountain (or pill) of youth—or at least the appearance thereof!

Nutritionist and fitness expert Paula Simpson on the health, beauty benefits of cleanses

The health of your body depends on 3 basic elements:

1. The quality of nutrients taken in from your diet
2. How well these nutrients are digested and absorbed
3. The effectiveness of the bodies waste removal

It is only recently I have heard the hype regarding the health benefits of detoxification. But in reality, cleansing programs are not new and have been used as a means to rejuvenate the body and mind for many years. Today, we realize that we have managed to manipulate and drastically change the environment in which we live. We have developed new ways to decrease the nutritional value of our food supply through processing and increased toxic exposure through both the environment and food chain.

Internal pollution occurs when unhealthful toxins overcome our eliminative pathways in the body. The intestine, the liver, skin, lungs and kidneys all have specific roles in neutralizing and eliminating toxins from our body. When these organs become overwhelmed, internal pollution will increase and can negatively impact overall health.

The DETOX and Beauty Connection

Studies show that environmental factors can have a negative impact on both the structure and properties of the skin, leading many experts to believe environmental pollutants can accelerate skin aging.

Your skin is your body’s largest organ and barrier from the outside world. When your skin is constantly exposed to pollutants and UV damaging rays over an extended period of time, it becomes more vulnerable to free radical damage. Excessive free radical exposure through a toxic diet and environmental pollutants harm the skin by damaging DNA and cell membranes that keep the skin plump and firm.

Over time, skin cells can no longer perform their normal functions such as healthy cell turnover, processing nutrients and eliminating waste. This can trigger irritation, inflammation and destroy collagen/elastin resulting in thin, wrinkled and blotchy skin.

Along with a healthy lifestyle, cleansing programs are great to help “clear” those key filters in the body to promote vitality and overall wellbeing. It is best to do a cleanse every 4 months or so, depending on your lifestyle. Watch out for cleanses that promote very low-calorie diets or contain harsh laxatives and diuretics. Good programs should support the digestive system and help to regulate the liver detox process. It is important to follow a “whole foods” eating plan and drink lots of distilled water while on the program. There may be some mild side effects in the first few days of the cleanse but by the end of the program your whole body will feel re-energized and your skin will be beautiful!
As I have always noted to my clients, if you feel well, you will look well!

First Lady says hubby hasn't lit a cigarette in almost a year; genConnect nutrition expert Paula Simpson on how to repair damage.

Hats off to President Obama for finally kicking his smoking habit!

First Lady Michelle Obama said Tuesday that her husband had not had a cigarette in almost a year. In the past, the president has been open about his tough fight with smoking. In 2009, he said: “I don’t do it in front of my kids, I don’t do it in front of my family, and I would say that I am 95 percent cured.” Mrs. Obama told “The Today Show” this morning that her husband has received much encouragement from friends and family around him.

“From all of the women in my husband’s life, we want him to be healthy. He’s worked hard at it,” Mrs. Obama said.

We all know smoking does a job on the lungs, but it also contributes to heart disease, harms your skin and makes you age faster. If you have rid yourself of butts for good and feel like you want to treat yourself, why not try Nutritional Cosmetics (Nutricosmetics, for short)? Rated a top 10 trend for 2010, Nutricosmetics are essentially the “missing link” between personal care and optimal beauty, according to genConnect nutrition and fitness expert Paula Simpson.

“Increasingly, North Americans are becoming more educated and sophisticated in their understanding on the benefits of how optimal nutrition relates to how they look and feel,” Simpson says. ”There are many factors that can accelerate skin aging that may include hormonal imbalance, inflammation, smoking and exposure to ultraviolet radiation.”

In conjunction with an antioxidant rich diet, Simpson says, Nutricosmetics may provide all critical nutrients to the body to help optimize skin cell renewal protect the skin from oxidative stress, aging, and help to minimize inflammation. Sounds good to us!

We hope Obama’s feat will encourage others to kick the habit for good!

A deficiency in nutrients directly effects your skin, the largest organ in your body ...

We have all experienced it! Fad diets focusing on imbalanced nutrition and claiming rapid weight loss (and there are millions out there!) To date, there are a few staple diets that have been around for some time and most of us seem to gravitate to one over the other (depending on our body type and lifestyle). Sure, we may lose weight and better yet maintain a healthy weight but what can these diets do to your skin over the long term?

As a Nutritionist, I stand behind “moderation and balance are key to optimal health and wellbeing.” Although for some of us, there may be obstacles with this philosophy to maintain a healthy weight and therefore manipulating the three macronutrients (protein, carbohydrates, fats) may help us achieve our goals. Over the long term however, imbalanced nutrition can cause macro/micronutrient deficiencies, offset our ph balance and promote inflammation. So how does this affect your skin?

The skin is the largest organ in the body and places incredible nutrient demands for optimal skin cell turnover and health. A deficiency in critical nutrients (caused by long term dieting) can negatively affect the overall appearance and tone of your skin. It is here where nutritional supplements with targeted nutrients to support healthy skin may help prevent these deficiencies while dieting.

If you are trying to lose weight, try to seek the guidance of a qualified Nutrition Expert who can direct you towards the most nutritious approaches to a healthy weight while saving your skin!

The 411 on Nutritional Cosmetics by Paula Simpson, nutritionist and leading health and beauty expert

Paula Simpson

Beauty foods, antioxidants cocktails and nutritional supplements with skin benefits define a growing category of wellness known as Nutritional Cosmetics (or more readily known as Nutricosmetics).

Rated a top 10 trend for 2010, Nutricosmetics are essentially the “missing link” between personal care and optimal beauty. Increasingly, North Americans are becoming more educated and sophisticated in their understanding on the benefits of how optimal nutrition relates to how they look and feel. As the medical aesthetic and spa industries are the experts in total wellness and beauty, consumers are seeking Nutricosmetics here to work along with their total beauty and treatment programs.

The 411 on Nutricosmetics
There are many factors that can accelerate skin aging that may include hormonal imbalance, inflammation, smoking and exposure to ultraviolet radiation. As the skin ages, the cells are more susceptible to environmental stressors. These stressors stimulate the production of free radicals, which can potentially damage cell membranes, proteins and DNA. It is the imbalance of free radicals and antioxidants that can eventually break down the connective tissues and collagen, and release chemicals that lead to cellular and molecular events that are evident as the formation of wrinkles, uneven skin tone, inflammation and sagging skin.

Skin is the largest organ in the body and therefore places incredible nutrient demands on the body for optimal growth and repair. Our skin protects us from our environment, maintains moisture, regulates temperature and is a part of our immune system. The skin is continuously exposed to oxidation and environmental factors which cause damage and challenge the normal functions of the skin. The deeper layers of the skin contain all the components that give skin its strength and elasticity. This is where the blood vessels are located that carry nutrients when taken internally. This creates a need for specific nutrients to maintain skin health and to prevent oxidative stress (skin aging.)

In conjunction with an antioxidant rich diet, Nutricosmetics may provide all critical nutrients to the body to help optimize skin cell renewal protect the skin from oxidative stress, aging, and help to minimize inflammation. To obtain all essential nutrients through diet alone can be difficult. Most products offer antioxidant rich formulations that may contain a mixture of minerals, vitamins, botanical and natural compounds to promote healthier, firmer, smoother and glowing skin. Omega-rich oils and marine-based seaweeds also help to hydrate and promote collagen production in the deeper layers of skin.

Typically Nutricosmetics work to:

•	Promote healthy skin through antioxidant protection, hydration and control inflammation
•	Photo-protectant properties (protecting the skin from UV oxidative stress)
•	Promote a healthy rate of recovery (wound healing)
•	Promote healthy hair and nails
•	Promote slimming

What to look for in a Nutricosmetic

Although there are a multitude of ingredients now being marketed for skin health and beauty purposes, it is important to seek products backed by health professionals with credible scientific studies proving the desired benefits. A product label can offer a wealth of information regarding the safety, quality and therapeutic value of the product.

Here is what to look for:
• The amount of ingredients. Active ingredients must indicate the actual amount used in the product. Watch out for proprietary blends as this is usually a variety of ingredients combined together and you therefore do not know the therapeutic value of each ingredient. Likewise, if something is an extract, it must indicate the ratio so you know the strength /potency of the extract used.
• A Kitchen-Sink Formula. If the product has many ingredients, most likely the therapeutic value is minimal.
• The Claims. If a product is making outrageous claims, then buyer beware! An effective natural health product should offer realistic claims based on the research & development of the formula.
•	Risk Information. Does the label provide clear guidance on any contraindications regarding health conditions, medications or other natural health products?
•	Quality Standards. Does the product state where it was produced? Is there an expiry date on the label?
