As a classically trained orchestral harpist who earned a BA from Tufts University and a Bachelor of Music from New England Conservatory of Music, Garcia found her initial legislative experience to be “daunting.” But she sound discovered that the skills were transferable, noting that her performance background makes her a more comfortable and effective public speaker.

Seven years later, Garcia is preparing for her fourth term. So what does she find so rewarding about her position?

“One of the things that’s wonderful about legislative bodies in this country, particularly in my state, is that everyone comes from such different backgrounds in terms of what their life experience is,” Garcia told genConnect. “You have a lot of people bringing very different points of views and skills to the table … and then applying those skills and experiences to create good public policy.”

“The reason I would like to be re-elected to my fourth term is really to finish some of the good work that I hopefully got started this past year with some of my colleagues,” Garcia said. “Particularly I’ve been working in health care regulatory reform, mostly to help develop the specialty sector in health care. We have a bit of an antiquated system, it’s a bit monopolistic and it’s not geared toward free enterprise so we’ve been trying to deregulate that in a smart way.”

But not all Latino voters will be casting their ballots for President Obama. New Hampshire State Rep. Marilinda Garcia is one Hispanic woman who supports Mitt Romney. Watch the young Republican, who is up for re-election herself on Nov. 6, explain why she supports his vision for America’s future:

“Mitt Romney is very passionate about bringing America back in the direction of, you know what, if you have a dream, if you have a goal, work ethic and ambition, we’re going to try to keep get out of your way,” Garcia says. ”We want to help you by letting you help yourself. We want every individual American citizen to be able to flourish and achieve what they want.”

In the Latino community, for example, Garcia said there are often state business organizations and other cultural groups that provide support for small business owners to get their endeavors off the ground. The government just needs to reduce the red tape and regulatory hoops to make sure such businesses get off the ground.

Stacey Dash

“Clueless” star Stacey Dash is taking a lot of heat on social media for coming out in support of Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney. After Dash, a 46-year-old black actress, Tweeted her support for Romney, she quickly became the victim of vicious attacks via social media for being black and not endorsing President Obama.

“You’re an unemployed black woman endorsing Mitt Romney. You’re voting against yourself thrice. You poor beautiful idiot,” one Twitter user wrote, while another accused her of ”voting for white supremacy.”

But Dash is receiving support as well, with one person Tweeting: “I support you. I respect your opinion,” while others wrote similar messages.

As for Dash, she responded by Tweeting: “My humble opinion… EVERYONE is entitled to one.” Dash also retweeted a Romney campaign Tweet that said: “Women have had enough of BarackObama’s disappointment. We need new leadership to get our economy growing again.”

Dash isn’t the only non-Caucasian woman in the public eye to support Romney. New Hampshire State Rep. Marilinda Garcia has also thrown her vote behind the former Massachusetts governor. Watch the young Republican explain why she supports his vision for America’s future:

New polls show Romney gaining on Obama in the general election. A Gallup daily tracking poll on Tuesday has Obama and Romney tied with 47 percent of the vote after their first presidential debate, whereas Romney lagged five percentage points in the days leading up to the debate.

“Romney got a significant boost” late last week after the debate, Frank Newport, Gallup Poll editor-in-chief, said Tuesday, but Obama may be ticking up again. But “overall we would say it’s looking like the race, among registered voters, is still tilting slightly in Obama’s direction. Among likely voters … we would think that Romney probably would be even or would have a very slight lead.”

Meanwhile, a Pew poll of likely voters conducted Oct. 4-7 gave Romney a 4 percentage point lead over Obama among likely voters, and ties Obama among registered voters. By about three-to-one, voters say Romney did a better job than Obama in the Oct. 3 debate, and Romney is now better regarded on most personal dimensions and on most issues than he was in September. Romney is seen as the candidate who has new ideas and is viewed as better able than Obama to improve the jobs situation and reduce the budget deficit.

“We’re just trying to keep the economy free but keep it successful so people can create jobs for themselves and others and educate their kids, feed their families, and be able to move up,” Garcia said. “That’s his vision, if I may, and that’s certainly my vision.”
