When it comes to parenting, moms and dads can’t seem to get enough information on how to raise their kids. Dr. Madeline Levine, a psychologist with close to 30 years of experience as a clinician, consultant and educator, talks to parents frequently about overparenting and how to avoid the practice. Her newest book, Teach Your Children Well: Parenting for Authentic Success, is “an attempt to take what we know about turning out good kids and just put it back out there in a way that parents can use on a day-to-day basis,” Dr. Levine says. Watch genConnect’s interview with Dr. Levine below:

For example, many parents think that by showing their infants Baby Einstein videos at an early age and by making them learn things as early as possible that will make them better students. But research shows “if you push kids too early, if you expose them to Baby Einstein, it actually retards language acquisition,” according to Dr. Levine.

“The book really takes a look at what’s the optimal, sort of, learning speed for kids of all ages, both academically and in terms of growing up to be a good person with a satisfying life,” Dr. Levine added.

Teach Your Children Well outlines how our current narrow definition of success unnecessarily stresses academically talented kids and marginalizes many more whose talents and interests are less amenable to measurement. The development of skills needed to be successful in the 21st century – creativity, collaboration, innovation – are not easily developed in our competitive, fast-paced, high pressure world. Teach Your Children Well gives practical, research-based solutions to help parents return their families to healthier and saner versions of themselves.
