Some parents are “handling their [kids'] lives so if they experienced any rejection, any disappointment, any failure,” the parents would do what they could to alleviate those experiences,” Gottlieb said. “These kids grew up and they had everything done for them but they family_shutterstockdidn’t really know how to handle themselves as adults. They didn’t really have a sense of themselves in a full and complete way, so they ended up in therapy.”

She conducted research and spoke to experts “to find out what are the factors that make for long-term happiness in marriage and how does that differ from what a lot of young women in particular are looking for nowadays.”

“A lot of us will dismiss people on very superficial criteria even tho we don’t consider it superficial,” she said. “It’s really about looking for qualities in a partner that you’re going to spend the rest of your life with and not the person you’re going to sit waiting by the phone for.”

“I think that parents are a lot more worried today,” Gottlieb says. “They feel like, what they see on the news, what can go wrong … they feel like they have to get [kids] a head start in a way they didn’t in previous generations.” Watch Gottlieb talk more about why parents are overstressed:

Whether it be doing baby brain boosters, or getting their children into the “right” preschool and the “right” college, Gottlieb says, parents think “that somehow this is going to set [kids] on a track to happiness.” “I think parents are really overworking themselves,” she adds.

“Look at why you’re making the choices you’re making,” Gottlieb says. “It is to keep up with the Joneses…(or) the Joneses’ kids? Why are you feeling that pressure? What do you think is going to best for your child as opposed to what everyone around you is doing?”
