Former chief evangelist of Apple, co-founder of Alltop.com discusses new book: 'APE: Author, Publisher, Entrepreneur' at SXSWi

Writers who want to successfully self-publish should build a marketing platform while they write, curate on similar topics to the book, and be authentic on social media, says Guy Kawasaki, who cowrote APE: Author, Publisher, Entrepreneur-How to Publish a Book with “tech wizard” Shawn Welch. “It doesn’t sell by itself,” Kawasaki told genConnect CEO Nancy Spears at the South by Southwest Interactive Festival. “Many authors are just shocked by how much marketing they have to do.”

Watch Guy Kawasaki discuss his own “traumatic” experience that inspired him to write APE:

Kawasaki and Welch wrote APE to illuminate the three roles — author, publisher and entrepreneur — of what they call “artisanal publishing,” in which writers take control of every aspect of the publishing process. “In this new approach, writers are no longer at the mercy of large, traditional publishers, and readers will have more books to read,” according to the book’s Web site.

Kawasaki provides tips for tackling the entrepreneurial role, which he says is the most difficult:

“The moment you start writing a book is the moment you start building your marketing platform. You should not wait until your book is done because it takes 6-9 months to build a marketing platform.”

“Always be curating — curating in the topics and the genres that you’re going to write your book for so that you have gained a positioning and a branding and a credibility in that area.”

“Just let it rip – Be yourself on social media. Don’t always be thinking about and planning. I think people think way too much on social media.”

CEO says Steve Jobs told him to always do 'what's right'; what a former Apple evangelist says Jobs taught him

Apple is bringing back “Made in the USA” to some of its products.

The wildly popular computer and gadget maker said this week that one of the existing Mac lines will be manufactured exclusively in the United States next year, but exactly which line that will be is still a secret. Apple CEO Tim Cook, who took over for the late Steve Jobs, said Thursday in an interview with NBC “Rock Center” host Brian Williams said he hopes this will spur more manufacturing in the U.S.

Cook also said that Jobs’ advice to him before he died in late 2011 was to “never ask the question, ‘What Steve would do,’ to just do what’s right.” Jobs didn’t just leave an impression on Cook. Watch Guy Kawasaki, former Apple evangelist, talk about what he learned by working with the late Steve Jobs:

for design,” Kawasaki said. Just because a company has a lot of money to throw at a product doesn’t mean that product is good, he said. Design matters – a lot, as does attention to detail. “It’s really a matter of taste, Kawasaki added.

As for Apple’s announcement, Cook said it’s important to bring more jobs to the United States.

“We’ve been working for years on doing more and more in the United States,” he said. “When you back up and look at Apple’s effect on job creation in the United States, we estimate that we’ve created more than 600,000 jobs now.”

Those jobs vary from research and development jobs in California to retail store hires to third-party app developers. Apple already has data centers in North Carolina, Nevada and Oregon and plans to build a new one in Texas.

To help you become a Google + master, Kawasaki has released an electronic book, showing people the ins and outs of the social media tool.

“I really love Google Plus, so [the book] was a labor of love,” Kawasaki told genConnect. “The last time I wrote a book about a product in particular was The MacIntosh Way in 1987. So twenty-seven years ago, I got inspired by a product and I recently got inspired by Google Plus.”

New iPad introduced by Apple; former Apple evangelist Guy Kawasaki on what makes Apple, brands ‘enchanting’

It has arrived. The new iPad by Apple was introduced to the world Wednesday, and is now the talk of the Web. Why does Apple continue to dazzle? Guy Kawasaki, founder chief Apple evangelist, talked to genConnect at last year’s SXSW festival about what it is that makes a certain company or brand “enchanting:”

“Apple enchants you, and you buy a Macintosh, an iPhone, an iPod, an iPad, you use iTunes and iBooks. The next thing you know, you’re standing in front of the Apple pop-up store here Friday at noon waiting five hours to get the iPad 2. That’s enchanting,” said Kawasaki, co-founder of Alltop.com and author of Enchantment: The Art of Changing Hearts, Minds, and Actions.

“I really think that enchantment starts at the heart and not the mind, and the starting point of enchantment really is that you’re a likable, trustworthy person. The third pillar is that you have to have a great cause, product, service. If you just had those three things, you’d be pretty enchanting.

“Some examples: Apple has great products, enchanting company. Virgin America, extremely likable CEO. Enchanting. And Zappos chips shoes both ways, pays the postage both ways. Very trustworthy. So those are three great examples of trustworthiness, likability, and product.”

The new 4G LTE iPad features a 9.7-inch retina display, a 5-megapixel camera and 1080p video recording - and for a price starting at $499. Backside illumination allows users to take great photos in low-light conditions and a new video image stabilization feature removes the bumps and shakes typically seen when filming with a hand-held device.

“The new iPad redefines the category Apple created less than two years ago, delivering the most amazing experience people have ever had with technology,” said Philip Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of worldwide marketing. “The new iPad now has the highest resolution display ever seen on a mobile device with 3.1 million pixels, delivering razor sharp text and unbelievable detail in photos and videos.”

We are at the event as credentialed press, hosting “2.5 Minutes With genConnect” in the Chevy Volt ReCharge Lounge during the conference.

Today we sat down with a humble legend of the industry, Guy Kawasaki. Author of the new book, Enchantment: The Art of Changing Hearts, Minds, and Actions, Guy reflected on the name of his book and what three companies he feels represent the word “enchantment.” See genConnect’s Kelly Hayes interview with Guy below:

KELLY HAYES: Back here at South by Southwest, I’m Kelly Hayes. This is Guy Kawasaki, the author of Enchantment: the Art of Changing Hearts, Minds, and Actions. A lot of big buzz about the book right now.

GUY KAWASAKI: Knock on wood.

KELLY HAYES: There’s 15,000 people here. You’ve got a message that I think you’d like to impart to most of those people, and that is that good business comes from the heart?

GUY KAWASAKI: Business comes from the heart. Enchantment in particular comes from the heart. That you have to be a likable, trustworthy person. Then if you have a great product, service, cause, idea, you’ll be enchanting. And I try to explain exactly how to do this in this book.

KELLY HAYES: And is this a book for people who work for companies, or is it really about personal growth and connection?

GUY KAWASAKI: This book is for anybody with $15. How’s that? That’s the niche I’m going after.

KELLY HAYES: Well, $14.99, I think, might be the deal. You come just about every year to South by Southwest?

GUY KAWASAKI: Yes, I do.

KELLY HAYES: And why do come? What is the attraction? What do you come to see?

GUY KAWASAKI: Honestly, I come to South by Southwest because there are no billionaires here. There’s no CEOs of large companies we’ve all heard of. And they’re not traveling with their entourage. It’s just a lot less BS at this conference.

KELLY HAYES: So you go to a lot of different conferences, and this is completely different from many others.

GUY KAWASAKI: I have four kids, so I don’t really get on an airplane unless I’m getting paid to get on an airplane. Except for South by Southwest.

KELLY HAYES: Oh that’s great. Well here we are. Saturday, once again, at South by Southwest with Guy Kawasaki. The book is Enchantment: the Art of Changing Hearts, Minds, and Actions. Guy, it’s great to see you.

GUY KAWASAKI: Thank you.
KELLY HAYES: Kelly Hayes back at South by Southwest with a guy who never gets a moment alone, Guy Kawasaki. Guy, everywhere you go, there are people wanting to talk to you.

GUY KAWASAKI: A lot of them think that I’m Jackie Chan. So that works in my advantage.

KELLY HAYES: So you get this in Hollywood too, huh? And Hong Kong. That’s fantastic. Guy is a legend in this industry, has done a variety of things, alltop.com is one that you’re currently working on, but what we want to talk you today is about Enchantment.

GUY KAWASAKI: The book!

KELLY HAYES: It’s a wonderful word and a great book that’s just out. A lot of buzz here about the book. It’s called Enchantment: the Art of Changing Hearts, Minds, and Actions. It’s a huge promise. I was taken aback by the fact that hearts with the first thing that you mentioned instead of minds. Can you tell us what you want to do?

GUY KAWASAKI: Well, I really think that enchantment starts at the heart and not the mind, and the starting point of enchantment really is that you’re a likable, trustworthy person. The third pillar is that you have a great cause, product, service. If you just had those three things, you’d be pretty enchanting. Some examples: Apple has great product, enchanting company. Virgin America, extremely likable CEO. Enchanting. And Zappos ships shoes both ways, pays the postage both ways. Very trustworthy. So those are three great examples of trustworthiness, likability, and product.

KELLY HAYES: So these are companies that basically are built around positive virtues and values.

GUY KAWASAKI: Yes.

KELLY HAYES: And working with consumers as opposed to just selling products. Is that accurate?

GUY KAWASAKI: I couldn’t have said it better myself. You should write a book!

KELLY HAYES: I’m blushing here now.

GUY KAWASAKI: Yeah, I make men blush.

KELLY HAYES: Yeah, yeah, and feather boas. So the book has been how long in the writing? How long have you been working on the book?

GUY KAWASAKI: Well, you know it’s an interesting question. You could say one year. You could say 30 years. Because it reflects my experiences as an evangelist at Macintosh vision and starting companies, just the whole thing. So a book is not just this yearly process, is truly isn’t.

KELLY HAYES: So it’s a distillation of all of your experiences in life.

GUY KAWASAKI: Lots of things I did wrong I tell you how to do right.

KELLY HAYES: Coming up all this way.

GUY KAWASAKI: Yeah, it’s amazing, I didn’t even go to Porter Hole.

KELLY HAYES: And this book as we sit here with 15,000 people who are all involved in this kind of world of digital technology, what kind of message do you think will it impart to these people?

GUY KAWASAKI: Well, I hope that they’ll take away from this book that there is a better way. It doesn’t have to be transactions-based, it doesn’t have to be to just sales, marketing, promotion, and PR just bludgeoning people to death. You should look at, one computer company sells you a computer. Apple enchants you, and you buy a Macintosh, an iPhone, an iPod, an iPad, you use iTunes and iBooks. The next thing you know, you’re standing in front of the Apple pop-up store here Friday at noon waiting five hours to get the iPad 2. That’s enchanting.

KELLY HAYES: It’s an amazing thing, because when I come to an event like this, I have my MacBook, I have my iPad, I have my iPhone, I have all the attachments that I need for those. And I think to myself how amazing is it that they’re able to sell me all of this. Conversely, I then start to think how amazing it is that they’re able to come up with products that I use for different purposes in exactly the same format.

GUY KAWASAKI: That’s a brilliant thing to think about.

KELLY HAYES: Well, Guy Kawasaki’s new book Enchantment: the Art of Changing Hearts, Minds, and Actions. It’s now in the bookstores, and you can also find it on Amazon and other companies that sell books. Thank you very much, Guy.
