Founded in 2004 as a one-day energy expo, American Renewable Energy Day (AREDAY) is now one of the most important renewable energy technology and policy summits in the United States. This year’s summit kicks off Thursday, August 16 and will feature discussions with Growth Energy’s Wesley Clark, Olympic snowboarder Chris Klug, actress Daryl Hannah, Earth Policy Institute’s Lester Brown and others.

We connected with AREDAY founder Chip Comins and Green Girl Minute’s Ginna Kelly to find out what you can expect from the 2012 summit. Watch:

Held annually in Aspen, the five-day event allows attendees to discuss critical issues like climate change and renewable energy with the world’s top environmental educators and authorities.  Educating the public on key issues is also an important component.

“We are going into our 9th annual AREDAY summit,” Comins said. “We’re going to really try to hone in on what is happening this year given it is an election year … and what does it mean to have leadership on energy policy? We are really looking forward to it.”

AREDAY organizers believe that public awareness is essential to understanding the critical timing of issues, as well as the huge potential for positive change in health concerns, jobs and national security.

On Sunday, August 19, attendees can browse the latest eco-friendly products through interactive displays at the AREDAY Expo. The pièce de résistance is the AREDAY Film Festival, which will take place on Monday, August 20. Screenings include James Redford’s “Watershed,” a documentary on the Colorado River narrated by James’ father Robert Redford, and “Shattered Sky,” a PBS documentary film that shows how America solved the ozone crisis.
